Northern youths back NASS on pipeline security deal

Northern youths under the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum have praised the National Assembly joint committee on Petroleum Resources for endorsing the pipeline surveillance contract handled by Tantita Security Services. AYCF president Yerima Shettima said in a statement that the parliament’s decision to dismiss petitions against Tantita and support the continuation and possible expansion of its contract is patriotic and should be commended by all Nigerians. Shettima said the lawmakers showed they understand the realities on the ground, noting that pipeline vandalism has dropped significantly under Tantita’s watch and warning that the issue should not be politicised. He commended the leadership of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources Downstream, chaired by Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, and its Senate counterpart for what he called a transparent and inclusive engagement with stakeholders in the oil and gas sector. The committee recommended moving policing from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent List to make state police constitutionally possible. It also proposed the creation of a Nigeria Police Service at the federal level and State Police Services for sub-national governments, with clearly defined jurisdictions to avoid overlapping duties. As part of safeguards, the framework insists that election security and related matters should remain under the control of the federal police. It further outlines multi-layered accountability […]

Senate confirms Dakingari as non career ambassador

The Senate has approved the appointment of former Kebbi State governor Saidu Usman Dakingari as a non career ambassador, following a fresh nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the confirmation during plenary after the lawmakers considered the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which screened Dakingari and recommended his approval. The confirmation puts an end to weeks of controversy over his earlier botched posting as ambassador to Turkey. In January, the presidency had named Dakingari among new ambassador designates and announced his posting to Turkey, claiming the appointments were drawn from 68 envoys confirmed by the Senate in December 2025. It later emerged that his name was not on the original list screened and approved by the upper chamber, forcing the presidency to withdraw the announcement and blame a “naming mix up.” To […]

12 Reps dump opposition for APC, ADC ahead of 2027 polls

Twelve members of the House of Representatives have defected from their parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress and the African Democratic Congress as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections. The lawmakers, drawn from different geopolitical zones, formally notified the House of their decision in separate letters read during plenary by the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas. Most of them cited prolonged internal crises, leadership tussles and irreconcilable differences in their former parties as reasons for dumping their platforms. Those who moved to the APC largely came from the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party and other opposition parties that have been battling factional disputes since the last election cycle. Others chose the ADC, which has been positioning itself as a major opposition force and actively courting sitting lawmakers ahead of 2027. Analysts say the latest […]

Senate rejects fresh bid to amend 2026 Electoral Act

The Senate has rejected fresh calls to amend the 2026 Electoral Act, asking opposition leaders to channel their grievances through proper legislative procedures. Opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, had demanded an immediate review of the new law, describing it as anti democratic and skewed in favour of the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections. They argued that certain sections of the Act undermine electoral transparency and called for the removal of what they termed obnoxious provisions that could weaken the credibility of future polls. Responding, the Senate leadership dismissed the pressure for a hurried amendment and advised the opposition to submit specific proposals and work through the National Assembly’s established processes. Senate leaders maintained that the 2026 Electoral Act had followed due process, including passage by both chambers and assent by President Bola Tinubu, […]
