Lebanon conflict deepens amid fragile ceasefire

Lebanon has once again been drawn into escalating conflict, reviving deep political and security challenges that remain unresolved despite years of fragile ceasefires and diplomatic efforts. During a meeting last August at the presidential palace in Beirut, Joseph Aoun expressed cautious optimism about stabilising the country after a devastating war between Hezbollah and Israel. A former army chief, he had pledged to address one of Lebanon’s most complex issues: the group’s weapons. At the time, a ceasefire reached in November 2024 had reduced large-scale fighting. However, Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah-linked sites continued almost daily, and tensions never fully subsided. Fragile ceasefire collapses The situation worsened after the killing of Ali Khamenei during a US-Israeli strike on Tehran earlier this year. In response, Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel, prompting a strong military reaction, including air strikes and a renewed ground offensive […]

US–Iran conflict: MAN lists urgent steps to shield Nigerian manufacturers

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria has warned that the escalating US–Iran conflict and wider Middle East tensions could severely disrupt Nigeria’s manufacturing sector through higher energy costs, shipping delays and imported‑input inflation. MAN says the shock comes just as inflation and capacity utilisation were beginning to improve, raising fears that recent macroeconomic gains could be reversed. To cushion the blow, MAN is urging the Federal Government to prioritise access to foreign exchange for manufacturers importing critical raw materials and spare parts. The association also wants domestic refineries compelled to allocate sufficient fuel and diesel to local industries at predictable prices to reduce exposure to volatile global markets. On logistics, MAN has called for an immediate six‑month suspension of multiple haulage levies, discretionary highway taxes and transit tolls that have made product distribution more expensive nationwide. It further recommends fast‑tracking energy […]

WHO warns of rising attacks on health facilities in Iran

The World Health Organization has raised fresh alarm over multiple attacks on health facilities and workers in Iran since the escalation of the US and Israeli military campaign against the country. The agency says the pattern of strikes is severely undermining access to life saving care and threatening the wider health system. WHO Director General Tedros Ghebreyesus said the organisation has verified more than 20 attacks on health care in Iran since 1 March alone. These incidents have resulted in at least nine deaths, including an infectious diseases specialist and a member of the Iranian Red Crescent, and several injuries among health workers and patients. The attacks have hit hospitals, research institutes and pharmaceutical facilities in different parts of the country. Recent strikes reported by WHO include incidents affecting the Pasteur Institute in Tehran, Delaram Sina Psychiatric Hospital and the […]

Oil prices plunge as Trump pauses Iran energy strikes

Oil prices fell sharply on Monday while European stock markets rebounded after United States President Donald Trump suddenly ordered a halt to planned strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure. His comments on Truth Social marked a sharp shift from his earlier threats over the weekend. Brent crude futures at one point dropped more than 14 percent before trimming losses to trade down about nine percent. West Texas Intermediate crude also slid, and European gas prices fell by around four percent as traders reacted to the pause in military action. Analysts said markets now need more clarity because Iran has publicly denied that any talks with the United States have taken place. That denial partly cooled the initial relief rally and reminded investors that tensions in the Middle East remain high. European stocks had opened the week with heavy losses but turned […]

UK, allies working on Hormuz plan but rule out NATO mission, says Starmer

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer says the UK is working with allies on a “viable” plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz but has ruled out any NATO led mission. He said the goal is to restore freedom of navigation in the vital oil route without dragging Britain into a wider Middle East war. Speaking at a Downing Street press conference, Starmer revealed he had discussed the crisis with US President Donald Trump and several European leaders. He explained that the UK is coordinating with European partners, Gulf countries and the United States on a collective response. Starmer stressed that any operation to secure shipping lanes will not be under the NATO umbrella and has “never been envisioned” as a NATO mission.Instead, he said it would likely involve a broader coalition that includes regional partners most directly affected by Iran’s actions. Pressed […]

The 2026 Finalissima match between Spain and Argentina has been cancelled due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East and the failure to agree on a new venue.Spain, winners of Euro 2024, and Argentina, Copa América 2024 champions, had been scheduled to meet on March 27 at Lusail Stadium in Qatar. UEFA confirmed in a statement that the game could not go ahead in Qatar because of the current political and security situation in the region. The announcement came after US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets and rising tensions that officials said made hosting the match there unsuitable. Following Qatar’s withdrawal as host, UEFA, CONMEBOL and local organisers explored other options, including moving the match to Madrid or Buenos Aires. However, no agreement was reached, with the Argentine Football Association insisting the game be played on neutral ground rather than […]

Middle East crisis: NLC demands COLA, wage award, tax relief

The Nigeria Labour Congress has asked the Federal Government to introduce immediate measures such as cost of living allowance, wage awards and tax relief to cushion the impact of the ongoing Middle East crisis on Nigerian workers. The union said rising global tensions have worsened fuel prices, transport costs and inflation, deepening hardship for salaries that were already inadequate. NLC President Joe Ajaero noted that workers were struggling even before the latest spike in energy costs and warned that many households can no longer cope without urgent support. He explained that the current N70,000 minimum wage has been overtaken by inflation and does not reflect the real cost of food, transport, housing and basic services. The NLC is therefore pushing for a cost of living allowance to be paid on top of existing wages so that workers can absorb sudden price shocks.Ajaero […]

Iran warns against wider war as Trump urges allies to escort ships

Iran has warned foreign countries not to join a proposed naval coalition to escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, saying wider involvement could escalate the ongoing conflict into a broader war.The warning came after US President Donald Trump called on allies and major energy importers to send warships to protect vessels in the strategic waterway. In a phone call with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged France and other nations to refrain from any action that might expand the fighting. He cautioned that further militarisation of the Gulf could push the region toward a confrontation that would be difficult to control. Iran has previously said it is prepared for a prolonged conflict with the United States and Israel and warned that such a war could severely damage or even “destroy” the global economy. The country […]

FG weighs options as Iran war pushes petrol above N1,000

The Federal Government is assessing its economic and diplomatic options as the war involving Iran, the United States and Israel begins to hit Nigerians through higher fuel prices and fresh pressure on the economy. Officials are closely tracking developments in the Middle East, where attacks on oil facilities, shipping disruptions and tensions around strategic waterways have driven up global crude prices. The conflict has already pushed Brent crude well above Nigeria’s 2026 budget benchmark, raising both risks and opportunities for Africa’s largest oil producer. On the domestic front, petrol prices have crossed or neared N1,000 per litre in many locations, with queues reappearing at filling stations across parts of the country. Marketers and analysts link the spike to higher international crude and freight costs, as well as supply constraints and the impact of the conflict on global refinery output and […]

Dangote Refinery absorbs 20% of crude cost surge to stabilise fuel prices

Dangote Petroleum Refinery says it is currently absorbing about 20 percent of the recent crude oil cost escalation in order to reduce the impact of rising global prices on Nigerian fuel consumers. The company explained that the conflict in the Middle East and disruptions to global refining capacity have driven Brent crude prices up by roughly 26 percent, while Nigerian crude now trades at a premium of 3 to 6 dollars above the benchmark, with freight adding about 3.50 dollars per barrel. In response, the refinery implemented a 100 naira per litre increase in its ex depot price of petrol, representing about a 12 percent adjustment, but stressed that this is lower than the full rise in crude and logistics costs because it has chosen to absorb part of the escalation. Dangote Refinery said it receives around five cargoes of […]
