The Labour Party has congratulated Abia State Governor Alex Otti on his third anniversary in office, describing him as the “finest outcome” of the 2023 political uprising that brought the party to power. In a statement issued Thursday, May 29, the party lauded Otti for his leadership, administrative strides, and efforts to improve the welfare of citizens in Abia State. It highlighted his focus on infrastructure development, public service delivery, and attempts to restore stability in the state’s political environment during his tenure. The party also praised Otti’s role in maintaining cohesion within the Labour Party at the national level, especially amid intra-party crises in other states. Wes Streeting Quits Starmer Government

Wes Streeting has resigned as UK health secretary following days of growing speculation about tensions within the Labour government and questions surrounding Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership. In a strongly worded resignation letter, Streeting criticised Starmer’s leadership style and warned that the Labour Party risks losing public confidence if it fails to provide a clearer political direction. Although he stopped short of officially launching a leadership campaign, Streeting suggested Labour should begin preparing for a future leadership transition and called for a “broad” contest involving multiple candidates. The former health secretary said remaining in government after losing confidence in the prime minister would have been “dishonourable and unprincipled.” Despite his resignation, Streeting praised recent progress within the National Health Service and stressed that his departure was not linked to policy disagreements, but rather concerns about the leadership of both the […]

Starmer Faces Revolt Inside Labour Party

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has warned Labour ministers and MPs that any attempt to remove him from office could throw the government into “chaos”, as pressure continues to mount inside his party. Facing growing criticism and resignation calls from several Labour lawmakers, Starmer used meetings in Parliament to defend his leadership and present what he described as a “radical” programme aimed at transforming the country. The prime minister promised major reforms in areas including healthcare, housing and immigration, insisting his government was prepared to challenge policies that had failed working people for years. His comments came shortly after the presentation of the government’s legislative programme during the King’s Speech delivered by Charles III in Parliament. Among the proposals announced were plans to abolish NHS England, introduce digital identity systems, reform leasehold property rules, strengthen rail infrastructure in northern England […]

Reform UK dominates local election results

The latest local election results in the United Kingdom highlight a major shift in the country’s political landscape, with support increasingly divided among several parties instead of being dominated by the traditional Labour and Conservative blocs. The biggest winner so far is Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage. The party has secured the largest share of seats declared to date, winning around 30% of the available positions. According to early voting data collected across more than 500 wards, Reform UK recorded an average vote share of 26%, placing it ahead of its political rivals. The party performed especially well in areas that strongly supported Brexit during the 2016 referendum. In districts where more than 60% of voters backed leaving the European Union, Reform UK averaged around 41% of the vote. By comparison, support fell significantly in areas that voted mainly […]

Akpabio says ADC is dead amid fresh National Assembly defections

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that the African Democratic Congress is “dead” following a fresh wave of defections by its lawmakers in the National Assembly. He made the remark during plenary while reading letters from senators and members of the House of Representatives who announced their exit from the party. Akpabio’s comment came shortly after he read the resignation letter of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who defected from the ADC to the Labour Party. As more defection letters were tabled, the Senate President joked that lawmakers leaving the ADC should “just compile everything in one paper” because, in his view, “ADC is dead.” Abaribe, who represents Abia South, said in his letter that his decision was driven by “ongoing legal uncertainties, multiple court cases and leadership crises” within the ADC. He described remaining in the party under such conditions as […]

12 Reps dump opposition for APC, ADC ahead of 2027 polls

Twelve members of the House of Representatives have defected from their parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress and the African Democratic Congress as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections. The lawmakers, drawn from different geopolitical zones, formally notified the House of their decision in separate letters read during plenary by the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas. Most of them cited prolonged internal crises, leadership tussles and irreconcilable differences in their former parties as reasons for dumping their platforms. Those who moved to the APC largely came from the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party and other opposition parties that have been battling factional disputes since the last election cycle. Others chose the ADC, which has been positioning itself as a major opposition force and actively courting sitting lawmakers ahead of 2027. Analysts say the latest […]

Olumide Oworu explains why he joined politics

Actor Olumide Oworu says he ventured into politics because worsening governance in Nigeria directly affects his life and future plans. In an interview on Naija FM, he said he remembers how the country was when he was younger and is worried about raising a family in today’s conditions. 2027 polls: APC, four parties set as 16 others battle candidate crises

With less than a year to the start of candidate submissions for the 2027 general elections, only the ruling All Progressives Congress and four other parties are considered ready, while about 16 others are entangled in leadership and candidate selection crises. The situation follows the release of the 2027 election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which has intensified pressure on parties to put their houses in order. The APC is seen as the most organised, with President Bola Tinubu widely expected to seek a second term and face little or no internal challenge for the presidential ticket, even though party leaders insist the race remains formally open. A few smaller parties, including some with regional strength, have also begun early consultations and are close to resolving their presidential and governorship choices. In contrast, major opposition platforms like the […]

DeeOne: Obi can’t win 2027 with sympathy votes alone

Nigerian comedian and media personality DeeOne has said former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi cannot win the 2027 election by relying on sympathy votes. He advised Obi to change his campaign strategy and invest more resources if he is serious about defeating the ruling party. DeeOne argued that emotions and goodwill may have helped Obi gain traction in the 2023 election but will not be enough in 2027. He warned that underestimating President Bola Tinubu and his supporters, often referred to as the City Boy Movement, would be a major mistake. According to him, presidential campaigns require strong grassroots structures, logistics and funding. He criticised the “we no dey give shishi” posture linked to Obi’s movement, saying campaign workers need basic support such as food, transport and welfare on election day. DeeOne claimed that some Labour Party agents struggled […]

Senate passes Electoral Act bill, drops plan for mandatory e‑result transmission

The Senate has passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 but declined to make electronic transmission of election results mandatory for the 2027 polls. Lawmakers rejected a proposed change to Clause 60 (3), which would have required presiding officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission to transmit polling unit results to the IReV portal in real time after completing Form EC8A. Instead, they retained the existing 2022 provision that results should be transferred “in a manner as prescribed by the Commission.” Senate President Godswill Akpabio insisted the chamber did not remove electronic transmission from the law. He said the Senate only chose to keep the wording already in the 2022 Act, which INEC used in the last general elections. The Senate also rejected a proposal to increase the penalty for buying or selling Permanent Voter Cards from two years to […]
