UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announces resignation

Article arrow_drop_down

United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that he will resign as prime minister and leader of the Labour Party after losing the confidence of many members of his own party.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street in London on Monday, Starmer said he would step down once the Labour Party selects a new leader, and that he will remain in office only in a caretaker capacity until then. He confirmed that the leadership contest timetable will allow a successor to be in place before Parliament returns from its summer break.

Starmer explained that growing questions within Labour about whether he was the right person to lead the party into the next general election had made his position untenable. He said he had listened to the views of Labour MPs and accepted their judgment that it was time for “new leadership” at the top of the government.

The resignation comes less than two years after Labour’s landslide election victory that brought Starmer to power in 2024, and makes him one of the shortest‑serving British prime ministers in recent history. His departure will also usher in the United Kingdom’s seventh prime minister in a decade, underlining the country’s prolonged period of political instability.

Reports suggest that Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is a leading contender to succeed Starmer, with several Labour MPs already rallying around his possible bid. Other potential candidates are expected to emerge as the party’s ruling bodies publish the official rules and timetable for the leadership race.

Starmer used his speech to defend his record in office, pointing to efforts to stabilise the UK economy, manage cost‑of‑living pressures, and rebuild public services, while acknowledging that more needed to be done. He said he was proud of Labour’s achievements but accepted that he could “no longer be the person” to lead the next phase.

Internationally, governments and markets are now watching closely to see who succeeds Starmer and whether UK policy on key issues such as relations with the United States under President Donald Trump, Europe, and global security will shift.

GehGeh criticises Peller’s marriage to Jarvis says money isn’t everything

Social media personality Ojaigho Prosper, widely known as GehGeh, has criticised TikTok star Habeeb Hamzat, popularly called Peller, over his decision to marry Elizabeth Aminata, also known as Jarvis, despite acknowledging Peller’s financial success. GehGeh reacted via his X (Twitter) account on Sunday, questioning whether financial stability alone should be enough reason to enter marriage. He argued that other important factors such as mental, physical, emotional and spiritual readiness must be considered before making such a commitment. He wrote, “Y’all are justifying his act with ‘he has the money, allow him’. But y’all failed to ask yourself if he’s ready mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.” He then added, “Everything isn’t all about the money.” GehGeh also expressed disappointment that Peller went ahead with the marriage plans despite his advice, saying Peller is still young and has more personal growth ahead. The 2026 FIFA World Cup has been praised for its exciting moments and viral fan experiences, but at least five matches that fans expected to be thrilling instead delivered disappointing results. One of the biggest disappointments was Spain’s goalless draw against underdog Cape Verde, a team ranked 65 places below Spain. Spain was one of the top favorites for the tournament, and many fans expected a high-scoring victory, but the match ended 0–0 in a lacklustre performance. Cristiano Ronaldo’s largely inconspicuous performance in DR Congo’s 1–1 draw with Portugal also left many viewers wondering whether he is past his prime. Despite high hopes for Ronaldo’s influence, he struggled to make a major impact as DR Congo scored its first-ever World Cup goal through Yoane Wissa. Mexico’s match against South Korea, which was expected to be a key battle for the […]

European countries have closed hundreds of schools and cancelled or reduced train services as a severe heatwave set to intensify continues to grip the region. In France, authorities closed 845 schools on Monday, with another 1,800 schools allowing students to leave earlier than usual amid temperatures expected to peak between 40°C and 41°C in many regions. Currently, 49 of the 96 mainland departments are under a red weather alert, an increase from 35 just days ago. The national railway operator SNCF cancelled 71 long‑distance train services since Wednesday, citing risks of air‑conditioning failures and track damage from extreme heat. Both France and Belgium have reduced rail services, particularly affecting commuter lines in and around Paris. Court remands Sowore in Kuje Correctional Centre over cybercrime charge

Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre in the Federal Capital Territory. Justice Mohammed Umar of the court ruled that Sowore should remain in custody until Wednesday, when proceedings will resume on a two-count cybercrime charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS). The charges centre on a social media post in which Sowore called President Bola Tinubu a “criminal”. The case has attracted public attention because of Sowore’s prominence as a long‑time human rights activist, former presidential candidate, and publisher of Saharareporters. His arrest and remand have also raised concerns about freedom of expression and the use of cyberspace laws against critics of the government. Sowore was previously remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre in 2021 over a similar social media […]

US disputes Iranian claims about closing Strait of Hormuz

The United States has rejected Iranian claims that its military closed the Strait of Hormuz, saying there is no evidence of a closure and that commercial ship traffic through the waterway has actually increased. Iran announced on Saturday that its military had closed the strategic Strait of Hormuz, in retaliation for what it calls a "blatant breach" of a recently signed US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding by the United States and Israel. Iran's top joint military command ordered the closure and warned that no ships or vessels should approach the waterway. US Vice President JD Vance disputed the closure during an interview with Fox News on Saturday, stating that there is no evidence Iran closed the Strait. US Central Command released a statement shortly after Iran's announcement, confirming that commercial ship traffic through the strait increased on June 20. "CCommercial ship […]

Japan raises visa fees for Nigerians and other foreigners by 400%

Japan has sharply increased visa application fees for Nigerians and other foreign nationals, raising costs by up to 400 percent for several categories of visas. According to Japan’s revised tariff, the standard single‑entry visa fee has risen from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen for most foreign applicants, including Nigerians. This represents a fivefold increase in the amount payable per application. Multiple‑entry and double‑entry visas have also recorded significant hikes, with fees moving from about 6,000 yen to considerably higher levels under the new structure. Transit visas, which previously attracted a lower charge, now come with increased costs as well, although they remain cheaper than single‑entry visas. In addition to the higher visa fees, applicants using visa application centres will continue to pay separate service charges and, in some locations, courier fees for document transfer between Lagos, Abuja, and the embassy. Bolivia’s president declares state of emergency after weeks of protests

Bolivia's President Rodrigo Paz has declared a nationwide state of emergency to free the country's roads from blockades after over six weeks of protests demanding his resignation. Paz announced the emergency measure early Saturday, stating it is to give freedom back to the people and liberate Bolivia from those using political conflict to block roads and harm the population. The president called the situation an organized attempt to destabilize democracy, saying the decision came after exhausting all avenues of dialogue. The emergency declaration gives Paz expanded constitutional powers to restore order, including the option to deploy armed forces to dismantle blockades. The order is effective immediately, but Paz must inform Congress within 24 hours, and Congress has up to 72 hours to endorse or dismiss the declaration. The conflict erupted in May after Paz scrapped two-decade-old fuel subsidies, causing gas […]

Trump unveils Qatar-gifted presidential jet, calls it flying White House

US President Donald Trump has unveiled a luxurious Boeing 747-8 jet gifted by Qatar as the new Air Force One, proclaiming at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, that the aircraft has been converted into a flying White House with unprecedented luxury. The jet, which Trump says is virtually double the size of the previous model, is painted in white, maroon and navy blue, with Trump personally selecting the red, white and blue paint scheme as a departure from the traditional light blue. The Qatari royal family donated the luxury Boeing 747-8 to the US Department of Defense in May 2025, intending for it to be integrated into the Air Force One fleet that serves to transport the president. Trump has said the Qatari jet would serve as a bridge aircraft to transport the president until the new fleet of Boeing planes […]

US envoy Witkoff headed to Switzerland for Iran talks — reports

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is heading to Switzerland where the first round of talks with Iran on a potential nuclear deal is expected to take place, a US official told Axios. US official said Trump's envoy Jared Kushner is already in Switzerland for the negotiations, which were supposed to start Friday but were postponed because of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Both Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi were headed to Switzerland for talks, as a ceasefire in Lebanon appeared to revive efforts to turn the interim Iran war pact into a lasting regional deal. The development follows a 14-point memorandum the US and Iran signed this week to halt fighting and open a 60-day window to resolve disputes over Iran's nuclear programme and other thorny issues needed for a durable deal. With the ceasefire in […]
