Police report: Bandits launch over 50 attacks in one week

Nigeria’s security challenges have worsened with a new police report revealing that bandits launched more than 50 attacks across the country within the space of one week, despite the government spending about N57.78bn on security. According to the report cited by Punch, the wave of attacks included killings, abductions, raids on communities, and assaults on security formations in multiple states, underscoring the growing boldness and spread of bandit operations. Many of the incidents occurred in rural areas, where residents remain highly vulnerable due to limited security presence and delayed response times. The report noted that, in that one-week period, bandits targeted highways, villages, worship centres and farmlands, leaving scores of civilians dead, dozens abducted, and several others injured or displaced. Some attacks involved the burning of houses and public infrastructure, further deepening humanitarian and economic pressures on affected communities. Despite […]

Insecurity in Yorubaland: Is Amotekun Still Effective in South-West?

Four years after its creation, the regional security outfit Amotekun (Operation Leopard) is still grappling with the hydra-headed security challenges in Nigeria’s South-West, as kidnappings, killings, and banditry continue to surge across Yorubaland. When the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), codenamed Operation Amotekun, was set up in 2020, it was launched with fanfare and optimism that it would tame the rising insecurity plaguing the Southwest. Four years on, however, stakeholders believe there has been a surge in crime and criminality within the region. Critical stakeholders, including traditional rulers, convened by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, recently confirmed the worsening security situation during a summit on insecurity. The summit observed that there have been organised, systematic attacks on traditional rulers and eminent sons and daughters of Yoruba land by suspected herders. According to the Council on Foreign Relations’ Nigeria […]

SERAP Urges UN To Act On Nigeria’s Insecurity Crisis

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to urgently act on Nigeria’s escalating insecurity crisis, warning that it threatens regional and international peace. In an open letter dated May 30, 2026, signed by SERAP’s deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the group urged Guterres to invoke Article 99 of the UN Charter and formally bring Nigeria’s worsening situation—marked by mass abductions, killings, attacks on civilians, displacement, and other grave human rights violations—to the attention of the UN Security Council. SERAP asked the UN chief to encourage regular and public Security Council briefings on insecurity, abductions, and humanitarian consequences in Nigeria, and to request systematic reporting by relevant UN bodies on attacks, displacement, and their wider impact on civilians. The organisation also urged him to publicly call on Nigerian authorities to uphold their human rights […]

Plateau residents lament as serial attacks kill 19, farmlands abandoned

Residents of Plateau State say their communities are turning into wastelands as renewed attacks by gunmen leave more people dead and drive farmers off their lands. At least 19 people were recently killed in coordinated night raids on Manja community in Chakfem kingdom of Mangu Local Government Area and Tangur community in Bokkos Local Government Area. Witnesses said the attackers arrived around 8 pm, shooting into homes and forcing residents to flee into the bush, with many women and children among the dead. Local leaders and community groups say repeated assaults over the years have forced many residents to abandon farmlands, turning once fertile areas into empty fields and bush paths. They lament that crops have been destroyed, harvested produce looted or burnt, and that fear now keeps many farmers from returning to their villages. Community representatives argue that the […]

Bishop Urges National Prayers and Unity to End Killings

The Founder and General Overseer of Save and Serve Christ Family Church, Ibadan, Bishop (Dr.) Jide Orire, has called on Nigerians to unite in prayer and support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration as the nation battles insecurity, economic hardship, and what he described as a “spiritual assault on the conscience of humanity.” Speaking in Ibadan, Bishop Orire condemned the continued killings of Christians, Muslims, and innocent citizens across parts of the country, describing the situation as deeply disturbing. He urged the government to take stronger action to prevent further violence. “What we are witnessing today is not just insecurity; it is persecution. Christians, Muslims, and other innocent Nigerians are being slaughtered, their homes destroyed, and their places of worship desecrated,” he said. “It is heartbreaking that in a nation under God, such wickedness continues unchecked.” The cleric noted that rural […]

CAN Accuses Presidency of Distorting Its Stance on Christian Killings

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has publicly accused the Presidency of misrepresenting its position on the killings of Christians in the country, leading to a dispute after a meeting meant to foster dialogue. CAN stated that it did not, at any point, dismiss the violence as a "so-called Christian genocide," contrary to a press release from the President's media aide, Daniel Bwala. The association insists that the persistent, organized attacks on Christian communities in Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt amount to a "Christian genocide." CAN expressed deep disappointment, stating that the Presidency's report was "completely false and grossly unfair." They clarified that their position remains unchanged and that the government's portrayal trivializes the pain of the victims. The Christian body is now calling on the Federal Government and security agencies to act with urgency and transparency to halt […]
