Nigeria’s security challenges have worsened with a new police report revealing that bandits launched more than 50 attacks across the country within the space of one week, despite the government spending about N57.78bn on security.
According to the report cited by Punch, the wave of attacks included killings, abductions, raids on communities, and assaults on security formations in multiple states, underscoring the growing boldness and spread of bandit operations. Many of the incidents occurred in rural areas, where residents remain highly vulnerable due to limited security presence and delayed response times.
The report noted that, in that one-week period, bandits targeted highways, villages, worship centres and farmlands, leaving scores of civilians dead, dozens abducted, and several others injured or displaced. Some attacks involved the burning of houses and public infrastructure, further deepening humanitarian and economic pressures on affected communities.
Despite the government’s reported N57.78bn expenditure on security, the frequency and ferocity of these attacks have raised serious questions about the effectiveness of current strategies to curb banditry and wider insecurity. Analysts and civil society groups have continued to call for better intelligence gathering, community-based security initiatives, and accountability in the utilisation of security funds.
Security agencies, including the police and military, have at various times announced operations that neutralised dozens of suspected terrorists and bandits in different theatres of operation. However, the persistence of attacks on soft targets suggests that bandit groups remain capable of reorganising and striking, often exploiting porous borders, difficult terrains and governance gaps.
The police report highlighted the need for a coordinated national approach involving federal, state and local authorities, as well as traditional and community leaders, to restore public confidence and ensure that Nigerians in vulnerable regions are better protected. It also warned that continued failures to address the root causes of insecurity—such as poverty, unemployment and weak law enforcement—could further embolden criminal networks.
