Sawe makes history with sub-two marathon

The London Marathon witnessed a historic breakthrough as Sabastian Sawe delivered an extraordinary performance that redefined marathon running. The 30-year-old Kenyan claimed victory with a time of 1:59:30, becoming the first athlete to complete a marathon in under two hours during an official competitive race. His time beats the previous record set by Kelvin Kiptum in 2023 (2:00:35) by more than a minute. Before this, only Eliud Kipchoge had broken the two-hour barrier in 2019, but that performance was achieved under controlled conditions and was not officially recognized. Sawe’s run is therefore the first sub-two-hour marathon in a standard race setting. Sawe was already on record pace at the halfway mark, passing in 1:00:29. He maintained strong momentum in the second half and made a decisive move in the final 10 kilometers to secure his lead. Yomif Kejelcha was the […]

Kenya open to 2027 AFCON delay over election tensions

Kenya’s local organising committee says it would welcome a postponement of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations because of likely election related tensions in the region. Committee chair Nicholas Musonye told AFP that shifting the tournament to 2028 would be good for Kenya as the country heads toward general elections in August 2027. Musonye noted that past polls in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have been marked by volatility and violence, raising concerns about guaranteeing security for a major continental competition. He argued that hosting AFCON during such a period could expose fans and teams to unnecessary risks. His comments came after a report in the UK’s Guardian newspaper suggested AFCON 2027, due to be co hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, might be delayed because the three countries are not yet ready. A Confederation of African Football inspection team is […]

South Africa raids US-linked refugee centre, to deport Kenyans over illegal work

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has arrested seven Kenyan nationals during a raid on a centre in Johannesburg that processes applications for people seeking resettlement in the United States. Officials said the operation targeted suspected immigration violations and was carried out with support from other law enforcement agencies. According to the department, intelligence reports indicated that several Kenyans had recently entered South Africa on tourist visas but were working at the refugee processing centre in defiance of their visa conditions. Earlier applications for proper work visas for Kenyan staff at the facility had been rejected, but the individuals allegedly took up employment regardless. During the raid, authorities said they found seven Kenyan nationals actively engaged in work despite only holding visitor visas. All seven were arrested, issued deportation orders and told they are banned from re-entering South Africa for […]

Kenya’s Marathon Star Ruth Chepngetich Banned 3 Years for Doping Violation

Nairobi, Kenya — Kenya’s women’s marathon world record holder Ruth Chepngetich has been banned for three years after admitting to anti-doping rule violations, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Thursday. However, her record-breaking 2:09:56 marathon time, set in Chicago last October, will remain valid as it was achieved before her positive drug test. Chepngetich, 31, was provisionally suspended in July after the banned diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) was found in her urine sample collected on March 14. Laboratory results revealed an HCTZ concentration of 3,800ng/mL, far exceeding the World Anti-Doping Agency’s minimum threshold of 20ng/mL. Initially, Chepngetich denied any wrongdoing, claiming no knowledge of how the substance entered her system. An AIU investigation analyzed her medications, supplements, and phone data but found no evidence to support her defense. Two weeks after her suspension, on July 31, Chepngetich changed her explanation, […]
