Fire in Kenya Girls’ School Dorm Kills 16 Students

Article arrow_drop_down

At least 16 students have been killed after a fire ripped through a girls’ school dormitory in central Kenya.

The blaze broke out around 1 a.m. at Utumishi Girls’ Academy Senior School in the Gilgil area of Nakuru County, with reports indicating it was not reported until more than two hours later. Kenyan Red Cross officials said first responders, ambulance teams and support personnel were deployed to the scene as the fire was brought under control.

Authorities said at least 16 girls lost their lives, while more than 70 others were injured and taken to hospitals for treatment, with several in critical condition. Police and emergency agencies are still searching the school grounds in case some students fled during the chaos.

Police official Masoud Mwinyi described the incident as “distressing and saddening” while addressing anxious parents who rushed to the school after news of the fire spread. Local media and social media posts showed heartbroken families gathering outside the school, desperate for information about their children.

The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, and an investigation has been launched. School fires are not uncommon in Kenya and have previously been linked to electrical faults, arson, harsh disciplinary measures and poor living conditions in overcrowded dormitories.

Kenyan authorities and humanitarian agencies have promised support for the affected families as the country mourns yet another deadly school dormitory tragedy.

Iran Calls for Actions Not Words as US–Iran Peace Deal Nears Final Stage

Iran has called for concrete actions rather than words after US officials said a peace deal extending the ceasefire in the Middle East war is close to finalisation, with the deal now awaiting President Donald Trump’s approval. US Vice President JD Vance said Washington and Tehran are close to agreeing on a 60-day extension of the current ceasefire, which was first announced in early April before Trump set an open-ended extension prior to its expiration. The tentative deal would also allow traffic to freely flow through the strategic Strait of Hormuz while negotiators continue to address more difficult issues like Tehran’s nuclear programme. Speaking to reporters, Vance described the Geneva talks on Tuesday as “productive in some ways,” though he cautioned that Iran remains “not yet willing” to engage fully on some elements and that negotiators are still “going back […]

Vance Says Progress Made as US–Iran Deal Awaits Trump Green Light

US Vice President JD Vance says Washington and Tehran have made significant progress on a deal to extend their ceasefire in the Middle East war, but cautioned they are “not there yet” and that President Donald Trump has not yet given his green light. Speaking to reporters, Vance described the Geneva talks on Tuesday as “productive in some ways,” though he noted Iran remains “not yet willing” to engage fully on some elements of the proposed memorandum of understanding (MOU). The pending MOU centres on Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile and limits on further enrichment activities. Vance said a few issues remain unresolved, including language details in the draft agreement. He stressed that the ultimate test is whether the deal satisfies President Trump’s red line: ensuring Iran will never obtain a nuclear weapon. They go to school, learn skills, and hustle every day, yet they face joblessness, insecurity, and leaders who seem distant from their struggles. This experience is common in Nigeria, Ghana, and Togo, even though their political and economic situations are different. Data and recent events show that youth frustration is not just emotional, but grounded in real hardship and broken promises. Nigeria: hustling through crisis In Nigeria, many young people wake up every day thinking about how to survive, not just how to succeed.
