Trump Moves to Blacklist Nations for Wrongful US Detentions

US President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order to create a blacklist of countries accused of unjustly detaining American citizens, introducing sweeping penalties including travel bans. The order establishes a new designation — “state sponsors of wrongful detention” — mirroring the existing US list of state sponsors of terrorism. “With this EO you are signing today, you are drawing a line in the sand that US citizens will not be used as bargaining chips,” Trump aide Sebastian Gorka told reporters in the Oval Office. The Trump administration did not immediately disclose the countries likely to be listed, but a senior US official confirmed that China, Iran, and Afghanistan were under review for what Washington calls “persistent hostage diplomacy.” Countries designated under the new system could face sanctions, export controls, and visa bans for officials complicit in wrongful imprisonment. Iran’s Regional Influence Weakens Amid Setbacks

Over the past two years, Iran’s network of allies across the Middle East has endured significant setbacks. In Syria, the regime of President Bashar al-Assad has collapsed. In Lebanon, Hezbollah was forced to lay down its arms under a United States-brokered ceasefire and now faces mounting pressure to fully disarm. In Yemen, the Houthis were compelled to halt disruptions of maritime traffic through the Red Sea following heavy US bombardments that targeted infrastructure and civilian areas. Adding to the string of losses, an Israeli airstrike on Thursday killed Yemen’s prime minister, Ahmed al-Rahawi, alongside several ministers. These developments have dramatically diminished what was once seen as Iran’s formidable deterrence in the region. Observers warn that Tehran’s influence may shrink further as its position in Iraq grows increasingly precarious. The Iraqi government is under pressure from Washington to curb the power […]

Germany urges citizens to leave Iran over security risks

Germany has advised its citizens to immediately leave Iran, citing possible retaliation from Tehran following Berlin’s role in activating United Nations sanctions linked to Iran’s nuclear programme. On Thursday, Germany, alongside Britain and France, initiated a 30-day process to reimpose U.N. sanctions on Iran, a move that is expected to heighten tensions in the region. The decision comes just two months after Israel and the United States carried out airstrikes against Iran. In a statement published on its official website, Germany’s Foreign Ministry warned that Iranian authorities had repeatedly threatened consequences over the sanctions push. “As Iranian government representatives have repeatedly threatened with consequences in this case, it cannot be ruled out that German interests and nationals will be affected by countermeasures in Iran,” the ministry said. The government also noted that the German Embassy in Tehran is currently operating […]
