Chelle puts 22 Super Eagles through first full Antalya training

Article arrow_drop_down

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has conducted his first full training session with 22 players in Antalya, Turkey, as preparations intensify for international friendlies against Iran and Jordan. The workout took place at the Bellis Deluxe Hotel sports complex on Wednesday evening.

The camp was strengthened by a wave of late arrivals, with captain Wilfred Ndidi becoming the 22nd player to join the squad. His arrival followed that of reigning CAF African Player of the Year Ademola Lookman and other Europe based stars, leaving centre back Calvin Bassey as the major absentee after he pulled out with a back injury.

Wednesday’s session, which started at 4:00pm local time (2:00pm Nigerian time), began with intensive recovery work to ease travel fatigue. The focus then shifted to tactical drills as Chelle and his assistants started shaping the team for Friday’s clash with Iran.

With Bassey ruled out, Chelle spent extra time working with Semi Ajayi, Igoh Ogbu and Zaidu Sanusi as he looks to build a solid back line capable of handling Iran’s powerful attack. The session also offered a first close look at the new faces invited to the squad.

Debutants Emmanuel Fernandez of Rangers, Philip Otele of Hamburger SV and Collins Yira Sor of Genk were all heavily involved in small sided games and tactical exercises. Coaches used the drills to assess how quickly they could adapt to the Super Eagles’ playing style.

In goal, the absence of first choice keeper Stanley Nwabali opened up strong competition among Maduka Okoye, Francis Uzoho and Adebayo Adeleye. The trio were put through sharp reflex and handling tests as Chelle weighs his options for the starting spot against Iran’s Team Melli.

Team media officer Promise Efoghe reported a very positive mood in camp, noting that having the captain and other senior players available from the first full session has helped the coach lay down his philosophy quickly.

All 22 players currently in Antalya are: goalkeepers Maduka Okoye, Francis Uzoho and Adebayo Adeleye; defenders Semi Ajayi, Bright Osayi Samuel, Bruno Onyemaechi, Igoh Ogbu, Zaidu Sanusi and Emmanuel Oluwasegun; midfielders Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, Fisayo Dele Bashiru and Raphael Onyedika; and forwards Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Paul Onuachu, Yira Sor, Philip Otele, Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke.

Hezbollah leader rejects Lebanon–Israel direct talks

His remarks come after Lebanon and Israel’s US ambassadors held two rare meetings in Washington in recent weeks, the first such encounters in decades. The initial meeting helped secure a truce in the ongoing Israel–Hezbollah war, and Beirut has been preparing for direct talks aimed at reaching a peace deal with Israel, a country it has officially been at war with since 1948. “We categorically reject direct negotiations with Israel, and those in power should know that their actions will not benefit Lebanon or themselves,” Qassem said in a statement broadcast on Hezbollah’s Al‑Manar TV channel. He urged authorities to “back down from their grave sin that is putting Lebanon in a spiral of instability,” accusing the government […]

Sawe makes history with sub-two marathon

The London Marathon witnessed a historic breakthrough as Sabastian Sawe delivered an extraordinary performance that redefined marathon running. The 30-year-old Kenyan claimed victory with a time of 1:59:30, becoming the first athlete to complete a marathon in under two hours during an official competitive race. His time beats the previous record set by Kelvin Kiptum in 2023 (2:00:35) by more than a minute. Before this, only Eliud Kipchoge had broken the two-hour barrier in 2019, but that performance was achieved under controlled conditions and was not officially recognized. Sawe’s run is therefore the first sub-two-hour marathon in a standard race setting. Sawe was already on record pace at the halfway mark, passing in 1:00:29. He maintained strong momentum in the second half and made a decisive move in the final 10 kilometers to secure his lead. Yomif Kejelcha was the […]

Fenerbahçe subsequently lodged an official complaint with the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), arguing that the gear could pose a danger to opposing players. After reviewing the case, the federation rejected Fenerbahçe’s protest and confirmed that the brace had been medically approved. Officials said all necessary consultations were carried out before Osimhen was authorised to use the support in competitive matches. Fenerbahçe’s unease is understood to be tied to the importance of the derby in the tight Super Lig title race. With Tavernier widely expected to leave Ibrox at the end of the season, the club is actively scouring the market for defensive reinforcements and has zeroed in on Alebiosu following his impressive performances in England. The 23 year old full back is under contract with Blackburn Rovers until 2028 and has also attracted interest from Serie A side Genoa, Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg and Premier League club Everton. Blackburn’s uncertain league position could influence negotiations, with reports suggesting relegation fears might force the club to consider a lower fee than originally expected. As Rangers prepare for a new era beyond Tavernier, Alebiosu’s energy, versatility and development potential make him a strong option to fill the looming void on […]
