UK allows diesel and jet fuel refined from Russian oil

The UK government has issued a licence allowing imports of diesel and jet fuel that were refined from Russian crude in third countries, officials said. The move responds to rising fuel prices and supply concerns after disruptions linked to the conflict in the Middle East and a closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The licence, published on Tuesday and effective immediately, covers diesel and jet fuel refined abroad — notably in countries such as India and Turkey — while other oil product restrictions remain in place. Companies bringing these fuels into the UK must keep required records and follow conditions set by the licence. Government ministers said the change is needed to protect supply chains and ease cost‑of‑living pressures for households and businesses, while saying overall sanctions pressure on Russia will continue. The licence is indefinite but will be reviewed […]

India Faces Pressure From Iran War

As the conflict involving Iran enters its third month with no clear resolution in sight, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens to reduce spending and conserve resources amid growing economic pressure linked to rising global energy costs. Speaking during a public event in Hyderabad, Modi encouraged Indians to work from home when possible, limit unnecessary foreign travel, reduce fuel consumption and avoid excessive purchases of gold. The appeal has drawn comparisons to the Covid-19 period, when the government relied on nationwide public participation to manage economic and social challenges. This time, the government’s focus is on protecting India’s foreign exchange reserves and limiting pressure on the national economy as the war in the Middle East disrupts global energy markets. India remains heavily dependent on imported energy, purchasing nearly 90% of its crude oil and about half of its […]

Modi visits Israel as US Iran tensions rise

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Israel on Wednesday for a two day visit that both governments say will deepen ties, as fears grow over a possible military clash between the United States and Iran. Modi, a Hindu nationalist, was the first Indian prime minister ever to visit Israel in 2017, when he and Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu famously walked barefoot together on a Haifa beach. The two men remain in power nearly nine years later and describe each other as friends. During this visit they are expected to hold talks on artificial intelligence and defence cooperation at a time when Israel is seeking to expand its military exports. An Israeli government official said the trip would pave the way for new partnerships in many sectors, while a foreign ministry official said bilateral relations were close to a significant […]

India, EU seal landmark trade deal to slash tariffs on most goods

India and the European Union have reached a landmark trade agreement that will sharply cut or eliminate tariffs on most goods, opening up India’s vast market and deepening ties between the two economies. The pact aims to reduce duties on 96.6 percent of traded goods by value and is expected to double EU exports to India by 2032 while saving European companies about 4 billion euros in customs duties. Under the deal, the EU will phase out tariffs on 99.5 percent of goods imported from India over seven years, including marine products, leather, textiles, chemicals, rubber, base metals and gems and jewellery. Sensitive farm products such as soya, beef, sugar, rice and dairy are excluded from the agreement. For European carmakers, India will slash tariffs on imported vehicles from as high as 110 percent to 10 percent over five years, […]

China says US is trying to block closer India ties

China has accused the United States of twisting its defence policy in an effort to block closer ties between Beijing and New Delhi. Foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks in Beijing while reacting to a U.S. Pentagon report on China’s approach to India. The report suggested China may seek to use easing border tensions with India to curb the growth of U.S.–India relations. Lin said China views its relationship with India from a long term and strategic perspective. He added that the border issue is strictly a matter between the two neighbours. He said China opposes any outside country commenting on or interfering in the border dispute. Lin also rejected what he called U.S. attempts to misrepresent China’s defence policy.

India deports 32 Nigerians over alleged drug network links

Indian authorities have deported 32 Nigerians after a nationwide crackdown on an alleged transnational drug network operating across several major cities. The deportations came less than two weeks after around 50 Nigerian suspects were arrested in coordinated raids led by India’s Elite Anti Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement, known as EAGLE, working with Delhi Police. Investigators say the network was allegedly controlled by a Nigeria based kingpin identified only as “Nick,” who is wanted in multiple drug trafficking cases in India. Officials claim all the Nigerians arrested in Delhi were working for the fugitive mastermind, who is believed to have about 100 associates in the city alone. A forensic review of seized phones and laptops reportedly showed a client base of more than 3,000 people across India, pieced together from payment records, encrypted chats and delivery contacts. The syndicate is […]
