Nigeria Moves to Tap $3.5trn Global Halal Economy

Nigeria is taking steps to position itself for a bigger share of the fast growing global halal economy estimated at several trillion dollars in value. The federal government and private sector stakeholders are working together to build structures that will allow the country to benefit from halal trade investment and finance opportunities. President Bola Tinubu earlier this year launched Nigeria's National Halal Economy Strategy in Abuja. The policy is designed to help Nigeria tap into the global halal market valued at about 7.7 trillion dollars by promoting standards certification and investments in halal compliant products and services. According to government projections the strategy could add around 1.5 billion dollars to Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product by 2027 and unlock up to 12 billion dollars in wider economic value over the next decade. Officials say it will strengthen food security deepen industrial […]

Tinubu confirms killing of ISIS leader in Nigeria–US joint operation

President Bola Tinubu has confirmed that a senior leader of the Islamic State group was killed in Nigeria during a joint counter‑terrorism operation conducted by Nigerian forces and the United States military. In a statement issued from Abuja, he described the overnight mission as a “significant example of effective collaboration in the fight against terrorism.” Tinubu said the operation targeted a compound in the Lake Chad Basin that intelligence services had identified as a base used by ISIS figures to plan and coordinate attacks. “Our determined Nigerian Armed Forces, working closely with the Armed Forces of the United States, conducted a daring joint operation that dealt a heavy blow to the ranks of the Islamic State,” he noted. Early assessments, according to the president, confirm the elimination of Abu‑Bilal Al‑Manuki, also known as Abu‑Mainok, who has been described by US […]

Tinubu: Nigeria attracted $20bn foreign investments this year

President Bola Tinubu has disclosed that Nigeria has attracted around $20bn in foreign investments so far this year. He said the inflows reflect growing investor confidence in his administration’s economic reforms despite global uncertainty. Tinubu highlighted recent commitments by multinational firms and development finance institutions across sectors such as energy, infrastructure, manufacturing and technology. According to him, these pledges are already translating into concrete projects that will create jobs and boost productivity. The President noted that his government’s decision to unify the exchange rate, phase out fuel subsidies and streamline business regulations has sent a strong signal to the international community. He maintained that while the reforms have been painful in the short term, they are necessary to reposition Nigeria for long-term, private sector–driven growth. Tinubu also assured both local and foreign investors that his administration will continue to tackle […]

Earlier this year, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, was invested as patron of the broader Renewed Hope Unity Cup project at a ceremony in […]

2027: Odds favour Obi, Kwankwaso as NDC zones presidency to South

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria and the vice‑presidential slot to the North, a move widely seen as boosting the chances of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso emerging as the party’s leading ticket. Delegates at the party’s maiden national convention in Abuja adopted a resolution restricting the presidential ticket to the South for a single four year term, after which power would rotate to the North in 2031. The zoning motion, moved by Afam Victor Ogene, member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, was unanimously endorsed by delegates. Party leaders said the arrangement was designed to promote fairness, balance and internal stability while addressing long running agitations over power rotation between regions. Former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso publicly backed the decision, telling delegates that zoning the […]

Probe alleged ₦26.9bn USPF scandal, SERAP tells Tinubu

The Socio Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to order a thorough investigation into an alleged ₦26.9bn scandal involving the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF). The group wants the President to direct the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and other relevant authorities to explain how the funds allocated to the USPF have been managed over the years. In a letter similar to its recent petition on alleged missing ₦2.9bn in NIGCOMSAT and the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, SERAP argued that the reported mismanagement in the USPF points to systemic weaknesses in oversight of key public institutions in the communications sector. The organisation cited past Auditor General reports and media investigations which raised red flags about possible diversion, unauthorised investments and opaque spending patterns around funds meant to expand telecoms access to rural, […]

FG begins plans to evacuate Nigerians from South Africa over renewed attacks

The Federal Government has begun plans to evacuate Nigerians living in South Africa who wish to return home following renewed fears of attacks targeting foreign nationals. Officials say the move is a precautionary step to safeguard citizens amid rising anti immigrant tensions in several South African cities. According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, at least 130 Nigerians have so far registered with Nigerian diplomatic missions for voluntary evacuation flights. She disclosed via her X handle that the figure is expected to rise as more people come forward, stressing that Nigerian lives and businesses in South Africa “must not continue to be put at risk.” The latest concerns follow renewed anti foreigner protests and incidents in parts of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and KwaZulu Natal. Obi, Kwankwaso switch parties ahead of Nigeria poll

Two major opposition figures in Nigeria have switched political parties in a significant realignment ahead of next year’s presidential election. Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who placed third and fourth respectively in the 2023 election, have both joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Their move has raised the possibility of a joint ticket to challenge President Bola Tinubu. The two politicians were previously members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who finished second in the last presidential race. While some observers view the latest shift as a sign of fragmentation within the opposition, supporters argue it could create a more focused political platform. Both Obi and Kwankwaso are former state governors with strong grassroots networks. Obi enjoys significant backing among younger voters, particularly in southern Nigeria, while Kwankwaso retains considerable influence in the north through […]

Report shows Nigeria’s economy rebounding strongly

Nigeria’s economy is on a clear recovery path after years of stagnation, with a new report by Quartus Economics indicating that key indicators have recorded their strongest improvement in more than a decade. The study, obtained by The Nation, concludes that “Nigeria is rising” and that the economy is back on track, even though growth still needs to be faster and more broad based. According to the report, Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product grew by a cumulative 8.34 percent between 2024 and 2025, the highest two year expansion in over ten years. This pace also outperformed population growth, which was estimated at less than 4.4 percent over the same period, reversing earlier years when the population was growing faster than the economy. Between 2020 and 2023, GDP growth averaged just 0.97 percent, while the population increased by about 8.78 percent, leading […]
