OPL 245 deal to boost Nigeria’s oil output by 150,000 barrels daily

The Federal Government says resolving the long running dispute over Oil Prospecting Licence 245 will unlock new deepwater investment and raise Nigeria’s oil production by about 150,000 barrels per day when fully developed. The agreement, overseen by President Bola Tinubu and signed in Abuja, brings to an end more than 15 years of legal and commercial battles involving ENI, Nigerian Agip Exploration and other parties over ownership and terms of the block. Under the new structure, the controversial OPL 245 oilfield has been split into four separate assets to be operated by ENI and Shell, clearing a major obstacle that had stalled one of Nigeria’s largest untapped deepwater reserves. Officials say the settlement restores clarity and stability to the block, removes a prominent legacy risk in the upstream sector and sends a signal to investors that Nigeria is serious about […]

Police Council confirms Olatunji Disu as substantive IGP

The Nigeria Police Council has unanimously approved the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector General of Police. The council, chaired by President Bola Tinubu and made up of the 36 state governors, the chairman of the Police Service Commission and the IGP, reached the decision at a brief meeting in the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja. Disu was appointed acting IGP on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun, and has now been confirmed as the 23rd police chief since Nigeria’s independence. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the confirmation complies with the Police Act 2020 and that there is no further need for Senate screening. Disu, 59, previously served as Assistant Inspector General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, and has a background in leading anti robbery and […]

Senate rejects fresh bid to amend 2026 Electoral Act

The Senate has rejected fresh calls to amend the 2026 Electoral Act, asking opposition leaders to channel their grievances through proper legislative procedures. Opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, had demanded an immediate review of the new law, describing it as anti democratic and skewed in favour of the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections. They argued that certain sections of the Act undermine electoral transparency and called for the removal of what they termed obnoxious provisions that could weaken the credibility of future polls. Responding, the Senate leadership dismissed the pressure for a hurried amendment and advised the opposition to submit specific proposals and work through the National Assembly’s established processes. Senate leaders maintained that the 2026 Electoral Act had followed due process, including passage by both chambers and assent by President Bola Tinubu, […]

US lawmaker: Christians suffer most from Nigeria’s violence, urges Trump to act

United States lawmaker Riley Moore says Christians have borne the overwhelming brunt of violent attacks in Nigeria for over 20 years and urged President Donald Trump to take decisive action. Moore said insecurity affects people of all faiths but insisted that Christians are disproportionately targeted. He claimed Christians are about five times more likely to be killed than any other religious group and accused Fulani militias and terrorist organisations of repeatedly attacking Christian communities, pastors and priests, and burning schools and churches, often on holy days. He praised Trump’s readiness to defend Christians globally and described the current moment as a once in a generation opportunity to deepen US–Nigeria relations while confronting the crisis. He acknowledged that Nigeria needs support to tackle insecurity but said President Bola Tinubu’s government must show stronger political will. Moore argued that any future bilateral […]

Tinubu to opposition: Elections not won on social media

President Bola Tinubu has told opposition figures and party supporters that elections are decided by voters in communities, not by debates on social media. He spoke through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Renewed Hope Ambassadors Strategic Summit in Abuja. Tinubu urged members of the All Progressives Congress to take government policies and messages directly to wards, markets, campuses and other grassroots areas. He said this face to face engagement is vital for countering misinformation and building trust ahead of the 2027 elections. The President also called for peace within the party in Benue State. He appealed to Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to reconcile with Governor Hyacinth Alia so that APC leaders in the state can work together on security and development. Tinubu praised Akume’s long public service career and […]

FG pushes $5.7bn China investment talks to drive power, industrial growth

The Federal Government is advancing negotiations with Chinese investors on proposed projects worth about 5.7 billion dollars aimed at boosting power supply and accelerating Nigeria’s industrial growth. Officials say the talks are part of a broader strategy to attract strategic capital into energy, transport and industrial infrastructure to support President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms. According to government sources, the Chinese funding proposals cover new power generation and transmission projects, solar and clean energy investments, as well as industrial parks and manufacturing hubs in key states. The initiatives are expected to complement earlier Chinese commitments of over 20 billion dollars across agriculture, mining, automotive, steel and energy sectors. Nigeria is positioning itself as China’s top investment destination in Africa, leveraging existing rail, road and power partnerships and seeking new deals in digital infrastructure and green energy. Officials argue that sustained Chinese […]

FCT poll: Wike free to back any candidate he wants – APC

The All Progressives Congress has defended Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike’s decision to publicly back its candidates in the FCT Area Council elections, saying he has a constitutional right to support any candidate of his choice. The party dismissed opposition criticism of Wike’s role as misplaced and politically motivated. APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said on a television programme that Wike, a former Rivers State governor elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, remains a Nigerian citizen whose freedom of association and expression is guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution. He argued that nothing in the law stops the minister from campaigning for candidates in any party. Morka’s comments followed outrage in the PDP after two of its chairmanship candidates in Bwari and Abuja Municipal Area Council stepped down and endorsed APC rivals allegedly after […]
