United States lawmaker Riley Moore says Christians have borne the overwhelming brunt of violent attacks in Nigeria for over 20 years and urged President Donald Trump to take decisive action.
Moore said insecurity affects people of all faiths but insisted that Christians are disproportionately targeted. He claimed Christians are about five times more likely to be killed than any other religious group and accused Fulani militias and terrorist organisations of repeatedly attacking Christian communities, pastors and priests, and burning schools and churches, often on holy days.
He praised Trump’s readiness to defend Christians globally and described the current moment as a once in a generation opportunity to deepen US–Nigeria relations while confronting the crisis. He acknowledged that Nigeria needs support to tackle insecurity but said President Bola Tinubu’s government must show stronger political will.
Moore argued that any future bilateral agreement between Washington and Abuja should be tied to measurable commitments from Nigeria. He listed conditions such as co funding humanitarian aid that prioritises Christian communities in the Middle Belt, setting up early warning systems for attacks and deploying armed security forces to protect at risk areas.
He also urged Nigerian authorities to remove Fulani militias from seized farmlands and allow displaced communities to return home voluntarily and safely. He insisted that all assistance should depend on Nigeria providing proof that it is genuinely working to stabilise the country and protect Christians.
Moore further asked Trump to consider sanctions and visa restrictions for those involved in or tolerating violence against Christians, saying the US has the right to decide who enters its borders. He called for aggressive efforts to disarm Fulani militias, alleging they are more responsible than any other group, including ISWAP and Boko Haram, for attacks on Christians.
