2027: Tinubu’s ex‑ministers to face stiff battles in home states

Fresh political permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections are pitching some of President Bola Tinubu’s former ministers against powerful forces in their home states. Vanguard reports that at least four ex‑ministers nursing governorship or senatorial ambitions are expected to resign and immediately confront entrenched party structures and sitting governors. The affected states include Kano Abia Bauchi Gombe Kebbi and Adamawa where local dynamics and existing rivalries could complicate their paths to party tickets. In several of these states, incumbent governors and influential bloc leaders are said to be uncomfortable with the growing profiles of the former federal appointees. According to the report, some state party leaders fear that a direct entry of ex‑ministers into the 2027 race could upset delicate zoning arrangements and existing succession understandings. This has raised the prospect of silent feuds between the presidency’s allies and […]

Tinubu approves ₦3.3tr plan to clear power sector debts

President Bola Tinubu has approved a ₦3.3 trillion payment plan to settle long standing debts in Nigeria’s power sector. The move targets obligations owed to power generation companies and gas suppliers that have piled up for more than a decade. According to statements from the presidency, the debts cover legacy obligations accumulated between February 2015 and March 2025 under the Presidential Power Sector Financial Reforms Programme. Following verification and reconciliation, ₦3.3 trillion was agreed as the full and final settlement amount. The intervention is expected to ease the liquidity crisis in the electricity market, improve cash flow to GenCos and gas companies, and enable more reliable generation. Many gas fired plants have been running far below capacity or shut down due to unpaid gas invoices and tariff shortfalls. Officials say the payment plan will be implemented in phases, combining direct […]

Tinubu Writes Senate, Seeks Approval To Borrow 5 Billion Dollars

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the Nigerian Senate seeking approval to borrow an additional 5 billion dollars from external sources. The fresh request is part of the wider 2024–2026 external borrowing plan aimed at funding infrastructure and plugging budget deficits. In his letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu said the new facility would support key sectors such as transport, power, agriculture, health and education. He argued that concessional and semi concessional loans remained vital to delivering priority projects at a time of revenue constraints. The Senate had earlier approved a 21.5 billion dollar external borrowing plan for the 2025–2026 period. The latest 5 billion dollar request is expected to be processed under the same framework once lawmakers subject it to committee scrutiny and debate. Tinubu’s government has defended its borrowing strategy as necessary to stimulate growth and […]

2027: Support for Tinubu deepens rift in PDP

Fresh tension has erupted in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as internal divisions widen over whether the opposition party should back President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 or present its own presidential candidate. A faction led by former minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, with the support of Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde, has firmly rejected any plan to adopt Tinubu, insisting it would be “improper” for an opposition party to endorse the flag bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. The rival camp, aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, is more open to supporting Tinubu and currently backs the National Caretaker Committee organising Sunday’s March 29 national convention in Abuja. This has left the PDP effectively split into two blocs, even as reconciliation talks continue and some court cases are expected to be withdrawn if a political […]

Iran war may force Nigerians back to working from home – Dangote

Chairman and CEO of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has warned that the ongoing Middle East crisis could push Nigeria and other African countries back to work from home arrangements similar to those used during COVID 19. He said the conflict, involving Iran, Israel and the United States, is driving oil price volatility that could worsen economic hardship across the continent. Dangote spoke after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the President’s Ikoyi residence in Lagos. He expressed concern that many African countries have little or no financial reserves to cushion the impact of rising energy costs and global supply disruptions. He noted that some countries are already asking people to work from home or reducing work days because they cannot afford high fuel costs. Citing Indonesia as an example, he said workers there now go to the office four […]
