Tinubu gov’t desperate after Japan visa denial

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of spreading misleading information after Japan denied creating a special visa category for Nigerians. Japan’s foreign ministry clarified on Monday that it had no plans to introduce visas specifically for Nigerians or any African nationals. The statement read:“There are no plans to promote the acceptance of immigrants or issue special visas for residents of African countries. Reports suggesting otherwise are not true.” This directly contradicted an earlier announcement by Abiodun Oladunjoye, Director of Information at the State House. On August 22, Oladunjoye claimed that Japanese authorities had agreed to introduce a special visa for highly skilled Nigerians interested in working in Kisarazu, and that artisans willing to upskill would also benefit. Reacting to the denial, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, criticised the federal government, saying it was desperate […]

Ronaldo & Rodriguez spotlight Saudi double standard

Cristiano Ronaldo and his fiancée, Georgina Rodriguez, have lived together in Saudi Arabia for more than two years, raising questions about the country’s shifting social rules. The Portuguese star, 40, and Spanish model, 31, recently announced their engagement, drawing attention not just to Rodriguez’s huge diamond ring but also to the fact they have long shared a home despite not being married. In conservative Saudi Arabia, where cohabitation outside marriage is technically illegal, such an arrangement would normally be impossible. But while authorities now largely turn a blind eye for foreigners, Saudis themselves still face restrictions. “Conservative rules are still on the books, but they are applied more flexibly today,” said Sebastian Sons of the German think tank CARPO. Social change for foreigners, limits for locals Foreign couples, including Muslims, are now allowed to stay in hotels or live together […]

Nigeria cuts polio cases by 46% – NPHCDA

Nigeria has recorded a 46 percent decline in variant poliovirus cases compared to last year, according to the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA). The announcement was made in Abuja on Tuesday during the second-quarter review meeting of the Northern Traditional Leaders Committee (NTLC) on Primary Health Care Delivery. The meeting was chaired by the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sa’Maila Muhammad Mera. Polio, a highly contagious viral disease, mainly affects children under five and can cause paralysis or death. It spreads through contaminated food, water, or direct contact but can be prevented entirely through vaccination. In his opening remarks, Emir Mera urged traditional rulers to sustain their commitment to ending variant poliovirus (cVPV2), stressing that the final phase of eradication is often the toughest. He also called on leaders to address low acceptance of other vaccines such as HPV and […]

Sultan tasks rulers on polio fight, insecurity

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged traditional rulers across Nigeria to remain committed to the fight against polio, routine immunisation, and other health challenges while also helping to tackle insecurity. He made the call in Abuja on Tuesday at the second quarterly review meeting of the Northern Traditional Leaders Committee (NTLC) on Primary Health Care Delivery. The Sultan praised the committee for its achievements over the past 16 years, particularly in mobilising communities for vaccination campaigns. He noted that traditional rulers have played a key role in boosting vaccination coverage by over 25 per cent in many areas. “As patron of the NTLC, I commend the federal and state governments for entrusting traditional leaders with the responsibility of selecting and supervising vaccinators,” he said. The Sultan stressed that improving health outcomes required not only drugs but […]

ASUU Demands Halt on Creation of 9 New Universities, Threatens Strike

The Yola Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the Federal Government to suspend the establishment of nine newly approved universities until existing institutions are adequately funded and equipped. Speaking at a press conference on Monday at Modibbo Adama University, Yola, Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Dani Mamman, said the move to expand the university system without addressing existing challenges amounts to a deliberate weakening of Nigeria’s higher education sector. Represented by Dr. Mbave Joshua, Chairman of ASUU at Taraba State University, Mamman argued that the Federal Government has continued to ignore the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, which prioritised revitalisation of current universities through sustainable funding. Instead, he said, classrooms remain overcrowded, laboratories obsolete, and infrastructure in decay. ASUU also rejected the recently introduced Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF), describing it as a “debt trap” that would […]

Atiku Confirms 2027 Presidential Bid, Vows to Rescue Nigeria

Former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has officially declared his intention to contest for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027. Atiku made this known through his long-time associate and spokesperson, Tunde Olusunle, reaffirming his commitment to what he described as the urgent task of “rescuing Nigeria from decline.” His statement followed speculation that he might withdraw from future contests after comments credited to Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University suggested he had shifted focus from presidential ambition to broader national development. Atiku dismissed the claim, clarifying from his UAE residence that Olateju did not speak on his behalf. “I will run in 2027. Nigeria must be rescued from the intensive care unit where it has been placed. The poverty, pain, and anguish across the country are unacceptable,” he declared. The former vice president accused the […]

Pastor Adefarasin: Nigeria’s Creation Was Driven by Colonial Interests, Not Divine Will

Senior Pastor of House on the Rock, Paul Adefarasin, has sparked debate after stating that Nigeria’s foundation was not divinely ordained but instead shaped by British colonial ambitions for economic gain. Speaking during a Sunday sermon, Adefarasin argued that the country’s creation stemmed from colonial power struggles rather than God’s plan. He referenced historical accounts, suggesting that Britain’s interests, not divine purpose, determined Nigeria’s formation. He further dismissed the popular belief that nationalists such as Obafemi Awolowo, Tafawa Balewa, Ahmadu Bello, and Nnamdi Azikiwe were the nation’s true founding fathers. Instead, he attributed the country’s name and structure to British officials, including Lord Lugard and his partner. According to him, Nigeria was established primarily to serve Britain’s financial interests, with its resources used to subsidize less prosperous regions under colonial rule. The cleric’s remarks have since generated wide reactions, with […]

AfroBasket: D’Tigers Return From Angola Today

Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, will arrive in the country today (Monday) after wrapping up their campaign at the 31st FIBA AfroBasket tournament in Angola, held from August 12–24. The team, led by coach Mohammed Abdulrahman, exited the competition last Wednesday following a 91-75 loss to Senegal in the quarter-finals. Despite the early exit, the squad remained in Angola until today, as their return tickets were scheduled for August 25. Some senior players had requested an earlier return, but the Nigeria Basketball Federation reportedly declined to alter the bookings. Notably, Houston Rockets guard Josh Okogie and a few others purchased their own tickets to leave Angola ahead of schedule. D’Tigers’ AfroBasket run included topping Group B with victories over Madagascar, Tunisia, and Cameroon, before bowing out against Senegal. Key performers for Nigeria included Caleb Agada, Josh Okogie, Stan Okoye, […]
