Former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has officially declared his intention to contest for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027.
Atiku made this known through his long-time associate and spokesperson, Tunde Olusunle, reaffirming his commitment to what he described as the urgent task of “rescuing Nigeria from decline.”
His statement followed speculation that he might withdraw from future contests after comments credited to Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University suggested he had shifted focus from presidential ambition to broader national development. Atiku dismissed the claim, clarifying from his UAE residence that Olateju did not speak on his behalf.
“I will run in 2027. Nigeria must be rescued from the intensive care unit where it has been placed. The poverty, pain, and anguish across the country are unacceptable,” he declared.
The former vice president accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of unprecedented corruption, loss of values, and lack of accountability, vowing that the opposition coalition—built around the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—would present a formidable challenge.
“Our coalition will shock the world in the 2027 election despite attempts by the APC to undermine it,” he said, stressing that his ambition is driven by national interest rather than personal gain.
Atiku, who has contested Nigeria’s top seat several times, maintained that the 2027 race will be pivotal to the country’s political and economic future.

World Cup gets cash boost as FIFA plans tough red card rules
FIFA has approved a major increase in World Cup cash distributions while also backing tougher red card rules ahead of this year’s tournament. The decisions were taken at a meeting of the FIFA Council in Vancouver, held before the organisation’s annual congress. Army arrests 10 terror suspects, rescues kidnap victims in North Central
The Nigerian Army says its troops have arrested 10 suspected terrorists and rescued kidnapped victims in recent operations across North Central states. The operations were carried out under various internal security deployments aimed at tackling banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes in the region. Gunmen attack Ekiti church, kill pastor, abduct worshippers
Gunmen have attacked a church in Eda Oniyo community of Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, killing the presiding pastor and abducting several worshippers during an evening service.
