US Green Card Review Hits 10 African Countries

The United States government has ordered a sweeping review of all Green Cards issued to immigrants from 19 countries, including 10 in Africa, following the November 26 attack on National Guard troops in Washington, D.C. The Trump administration announced the move after the detained suspect was identified as a 29 year old Afghan who had previously worked with US forces and was granted asylum in April 2025, not permanent residency. In a directive posted on X, US Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joseph Edlow said President Donald Trump had ordered a rigorous re examination of every Green Card held by immigrants from designated “countries of concern.” He stressed that protecting Americans was paramount and blamed what he described as the prior administration’s “reckless resettlement policies” for current risks. Under the new policy, USCIS officers can now apply “negative, country specific […]

Burkina Faso approves new draft Labor Code at Council of Ministers

Burkina Faso’s government has approved a new draft Labor Code during the Council of Ministers held on November 27, 2025, chaired by Captain Ibrahim Traoré. According to government spokesperson Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo, the decisions taken reflect the ongoing push for transformation inspired by the Popular Progressive Revolution. The Ministry of Public Service led the reform, introducing several major changes meant to modernize labor relations and tighten regulations around employment practices. Minister Mathias Traoré highlighted one of the key updates: stricter rules for placement agencies and temporary work. Under the new framework, temporary workers must receive the same pay as permanent employees holding equivalent positions within the hiring company. Another safeguard prevents any individual with direct or indirect interests in the hiring company from signing a personnel placement contract. The reform also significantly reshapes the fixed-term contract. A fixed-term contract can […]

NECO accredits Burkina Faso schools for SSCE, BECE

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has accredited selected schools in Burkina Faso to host its Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). According to Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, the decision followed a detailed assessment of classrooms, laboratories, libraries, ICT facilities, workshops, exam halls, sports grounds, security and teacher availability in the West African country. Sani said the schools were granted full accreditation after the evaluation, stressing that the move reflects NECO’s drive to provide credible assessment services beyond Nigeria’s borders. The development builds on NECO’s growing foreign footprint, which already includes centres in Togo, Benin Republic, Niger, Equatorial Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire and Saudi Arabia, as well as a newly opened centre in London. Nigeria’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, M.D. Galadima, hailed the accreditation as a major relief for Nigerian families who […]

ECOWAS suspends Guinea-Bissau after military coup

ECOWAS has suspended Guinea-Bissau from all its decision-making bodies following the recent military coup in the country. The regional bloc said the takeover violated its protocols on democracy and good governance and could destabilise West Africa if left unchecked. In a statement issued after an emergency summit, ECOWAS leaders condemned the coup and demanded the immediate restoration of constitutional order. They called on the coup leaders to release all detained officials, respect human rights and set a clear timetable for a return to democratic rule. The organisation warned that additional political and economic sanctions could follow if its demands are ignored. Member states were urged to remain vigilant and coordinate efforts to prevent the crisis in Guinea-Bissau from spilling over into neighbouring countries. ECOWAS also appealed to the African Union, United Nations and other international partners to support its efforts. Hayli Gubbi Volcano Erupts in Ethiopia After 10,000 Years

A volcano in Ethiopia has erupted for the first known time in more than 10,000 years, sending massive columns of smoke and ash into the sky and disrupting air travel as far away as India. The Hayli Gubbi volcano, located in the Afar region in Ethiopia’s northeast, came alive on Sunday after millennia of inactivity. The eruption blanketed nearby villages in thick dust and created new challenges for farmers and livestock herders in the area. Local administrator Mohammed Seid told the Associated Press that no casualties have been reported, but the ashfall threatens grazing lands essential for the community’s survival. Residents recalled the moment the eruption began, describing a sudden, explosive shock. “It felt like a bomb had gone off with smoke and ash,” said Ahmed Abdela, a resident of the area. NASA satellite images captured the plume rising dramatically […]

EU, Africa Leaders to Talk Trade and Minerals as Ukraine Looms Large

Dozens of EU and African leaders, including France’s Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s Friedrich Merz, and Kenya’s William Ruto, assemble in Angola for a summit focused on trade, migration, and securing Africa’s critical raw materials. The summit, marking 25 years of EU–African Union relations, is set against tense US–EU diplomatic rifts over Washington’s Ukraine peace plan, widely criticized as favoring Moscow. Efforts to revamp EU-Africa ties reflect new competition from China, Russia, Gulf states, and Turkey, with Africa no longer relying solely on Europe as a partner. The EU remains the continent’s largest investor and commercial counterpart, but resentment over colonial history and China’s growing presence threaten its influence. Key priorities include: Boosting intra-African trade and economic development, with EU support for major infrastructure projects like Angola’s Lobito railway corridor. Tackling migration and security cooperation. Ensuring Africa’s voice in global governance. Securing […]

Africa’s Carbon Credit Deals With Blue Carbon Stall, Raising Oversight Concerns

Several African nations, including Liberia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, and Nigeria, signed major carbon credit agreements with Dubai-based Blue Carbon in 2023 to protect forests and sell credits to global polluters. The deals promised revenue, environmental benefits, and local investment. However, within two years, these agreements stalled or vanished with little implementation. Liberia’s million-hectare deal was halted after concerns about transparency, lack of local consultation, and potential violations of land rights. Similar agreements in Zimbabwe, Zambia, and outside Africa (Papua New Guinea) failed to progress, often lapsing at the MOU stage. Background investigations found no trace of Blue Carbon or its projects in global carbon registry records. The company’s web presence and activities faded in 2025, and its offices could not be verified. Activists say the projects were primarily “greenwashing,” allowing polluters to claim climate action with no real impact or […]

Nigeria intensifies hunt for abducted Kebbi schoolgirls after deadly raid

Security forces in northwest Nigeria have launched an intensified manhunt for the 25 schoolgirls abducted during a pre-dawn raid on their school in Kebbi State. The attackers struck Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga around 4am on Monday. According to police, armed men on motorcycles stormed the compound, exchanged gunfire with officers, then scaled the perimeter fence and seized the students. The school’s vice principal was killed during the assault. No group has claimed responsibility, and investigators are still probing the motive behind the attack. By Tuesday morning, security teams had spread out into nearby forests known to shelter armed gangs. Additional units were positioned along major routes leading in and out of the area. Kebbi Governor Nasir Idris visited the school shortly after the incident and pledged swift action. Hours later, Nigeria’s army chief, Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, met […]

US Delivers New HIV Prevention Drug to Two African Nations

The United States has delivered a new HIV prevention drug, Lenacapavir, to Eswatini and Zambia, beginning its rollout in Africa. This move comes after US government aid for global health dropped significantly in recent months. The US, working with the Global Fund and Gilead Sciences, delivered 1,000 doses of Lenacapavir to the two countries, with administration starting this week. US officials aim to fund two million doses for low- and middle-income African nations, targeting a goal by 2028 or sooner. Lenacapavir is an injectable drug that only needs to be taken twice a year, providing an easier alternative to daily pills and improving access, especially for pregnant and breastfeeding women. It is seen as a breakthrough in HIV prevention and could greatly reduce new infections. The recent cuts to US foreign aid have affected other HIV and AIDS programs, including […]
