AU anti graft board seeks youth partnership to fight corruption

The African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption has pledged to deepen collaboration with young people across the continent in order to tackle corruption and build a future based on integrity and justice. Chairperson Kwami Edem Senanu made the commitment in Arusha, Tanzania, in a statement marking International Anti Corruption Day 2025. Senanu described Africa’s youth as future custodians of the continent who are not only victims of corruption and illicit financial flows but also powerful agents of change. He warned that corruption undermines development, erodes public trust and blocks human progress by stealing resources and opportunities. Citing estimates by Mo Ibrahim, he noted that Africa loses around 125 billion dollars every year to corruption. He said the day should therefore be seen not only as a reminder of losses but also as a fresh opportunity to renew collective resolve to […]

Rwanda accuses DR Congo, Burundi of breaking new peace deal

Rwanda has accused the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi of deliberately violating a ceasefire in eastern DR Congo just days after the three countries signed a US brokered peace agreement. Kigali’s foreign ministry said recent attacks in South Kivu “cannot be placed on Rwanda” and instead blamed the Congolese and Burundian armies for renewed violence near its border. In a statement, Rwanda alleged that DR Congo’s army FARDC and Burundi’s army FDNB have been systematically bombing civilian villages close to the Rwandan border using fighter jets and armed drones. It said M23 and allied AFC rebels had been “forced to counter” these operations, calling them deliberate violations of the Washington Accords signed on December 4. The renewed clashes come after Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi accused Rwanda earlier in the week of violating the same peace deal by shelling areas […]

Nigeria Sahel allies clash over detained military plane and soldiers

Nigeria and the Alliance of Sahel States are giving sharply different accounts of how a Nigerian Air Force C 130 transport plane and 11 soldiers ended up detained in Burkina Faso. The aircraft made an emergency landing in Bobo Dioulasso on Monday, but the incident has now triggered a wider diplomatic dispute over alleged airspace violations. The Alliance of Sahel States which includes Burkina Faso Mali and Niger insists the Nigerian plane entered its airspace without permission and was forced to land. In a joint statement the bloc called the episode a serious breach of sovereignty and said its air and anti aircraft defences have been placed on high alert with orders to neutralise any further unauthorised flights. Nigerian authorities reject the accusation and say the C 130 crew diverted to Bobo Dioulasso only after detecting a technical fault while […]

Nigerian military plane grounded in Burkina Faso over airspace row

A Nigerian Air Force C 130 transport plane carrying 11 soldiers has been grounded in Burkina Faso over an alleged violation of the country’s airspace. The aircraft was forced to land in the southwestern city of Bobo Dioulasso after what officials described as an in flight emergency while transiting Burkinabe airspace. According to a statement from the Confederation of Sahel States known as AES the plane had two crew members and nine passengers all of them Nigerian military personnel. AES which groups the military led governments of Burkina Faso Mali and Niger said an investigation showed the aircraft did not have authorisation to fly over Burkina Faso. The bloc condemned the incident as a serious violation of its airspace and the sovereignty of its member states and said its air defence systems had been placed on high alert. It warned […]

Democracy survives as FG explains failed Benin coup

The Federal Government has described how democracy in Benin Republic survived an attempted coup, explaining that swift regional and international actions helped foil the plot. Officials said the coup attempt was quickly contained, allowing President Patrice Talon’s government to remain in control. According to the government’s account, loyal security forces moved fast to block the mutineers from seizing key state institutions. Diplomatic pressure from neighbouring countries and regional bodies also discouraged wider support for the takeover. The Federal Government stressed that the failure of the coup is a victory for constitutional rule in West Africa. It warned that repeated attempts to topple elected governments threaten regional stability and economic development. Authorities called on citizens and political actors across the region to reject military interventions in politics. They also urged stronger cooperation among West African states to prevent future unconstitutional changes […]

Soldiers announce ‘removal’ of Benin’s President Talon in failed coup attempt

Soldiers in Benin appeared on state television on Sunday announcing that they had removed President Patrice Talon from office and dissolved state institutions in what authorities have described as an attempted coup. Identifying themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation and reportedly led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, the group said it was suspending the constitution, shutting borders and halting political party activities, citing dissatisfaction with Talon’s management of the country. The move followed an early morning attack on Talon’s residence in Porto Novo and a brief takeover of the national broadcaster, after which TV and radio signals were cut. Benin’s government later said Talon was safe, stressing that only a small faction was involved and that troops loyal to the president were regaining control of key sites in Cotonou and Porto Novo, with officials calling the incident a foiled […]

South Africa hostel shooting leaves 11 dead, including child

Gunmen have killed 11 people in a mass shooting at a hostel in South Africa’s capital, Pretoria, police have confirmed. The attackers stormed the hostel in the early hours of Saturday and opened fire, killing 10 adults and a three year old child at the scene. Police said officers responding to reports of gunfire found multiple bodies inside the building, while several other people were injured and taken to hospital for treatment. Investigators believe the incident may be linked to criminal or gang related tensions in the area, but said it was too early to confirm the exact motive. A manhunt has been launched for the suspects, with police appealing to residents for information and promising to deploy additional patrols to prevent further violence.

ECOWAS leaders push joint action against threats to democracy, rule of law

West African leaders have called for stronger collective action by all ECOWAS member states to tackle growing threats to democracy and the rule of law in the region. Meeting in Abuja, the heads of state and government expressed concern over recent coups, attempted coups and political unrest in countries such as Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau, warning that unconstitutional changes of government and attacks on institutions risk reversing democratic gains. They urged full implementation and possible strengthening of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, including tougher measures against military takeovers, manipulation of constitutions and other actions that undermine credible elections and term limits. The leaders also stressed the need for coordinated responses to insecurity, terrorism and violent extremism, arguing that weak governance and erosion of public trust in democratic processes often fuel instability and conflict. Civil society groups […]

Amnesty urges war crimes probe into RSF assault on Zamzam displacement camp in Sudan

Amnesty International is calling for a full war crimes investigation into a violent assault carried out by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces on the Zamzam displacement camp in North Darfur earlier this year. In a report released Wednesday, the rights group documents accounts of widespread atrocities during the large-scale RSF attack. The paramilitary force has been repeatedly accused of mass rape, indiscriminate killings, and other grave abuses since its war with Sudan’s military government began in April 2023. The Zamzam assault happened as the RSF tightened its siege on el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. The group now controls the entire state and is pushing east into West Kordofan, deepening the crisis and displacing millions. According to the report, RSF fighters launched explosives into populated areas and fired randomly across residential zones between April 11 and 13. Witnesses described seeing at […]

Niger Puts Nationalised Uranium on Global Market

Niger’s military government has announced that uranium produced by Somair, a company it nationalised from French nuclear firm Orano in June, is now being offered on the international market. The move marks a new phase in the standoff between the junta, which seized power in 2023, and Orano, a group that is 90 percent owned by the French state and has mined uranium in Niger for decades. The decision was made public on state broadcaster Télé Sahel, quoting junta leader General Abdourahamane Tiani. He insisted Niger had the sovereign right to manage its natural resources and to sell them “to whoever wants to buy them” under normal market rules and in full independence. Russia has already signalled interest in Niger’s uranium, with Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev saying in July that Moscow wanted to start mining operations in the country. Since […]
