Meta to cut 8,000 jobs amid AI push

Article arrow_drop_down

Meta is preparing a major round of layoffs, with thousands of employees expected to lose their jobs next month as the company ramps up investment in artificial intelligence (AI).

According to an internal memo shared with staff, the tech giant plans to cut about 10% of its workforce, representing roughly 8,000 positions. In addition, the company will halt recruitment for several thousand open roles, further reducing its overall headcount.

This restructuring is largely driven by a sharp increase in spending on AI. Meta is expected to allocate around $135 billion to AI projects this year alone, an amount comparable to its total investment in the field over the past three years combined. The shift reflects the company’s ambition to accelerate development of advanced AI systems and remain competitive in the sector.

The announcement follows earlier signals from CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who indicated at the start of the year that further job cuts were likely. He emphasized that AI tools are significantly improving productivity, enabling fewer employees to handle tasks that previously required larger teams.

“I think that 2026 is going to be the year that AI starts to dramatically change the way that we work,” Zuckerberg said, highlighting the company’s long-term vision.

Meta has already reduced its workforce by around 2,000 employees in earlier rounds this year. However, staff had anticipated a larger restructuring as the company intensified its focus on AI development.

The shift has also brought internal changes. Recently, employees were informed that their interactions with work systems may be monitored to help train AI models. This move has raised concerns among some workers, particularly in the context of ongoing layoffs.

Since 2022, Meta has carried out multiple workforce reductions, cutting tens of thousands of jobs. Although hiring briefly resumed afterward, the upcoming cuts are set to be the most significant since 2023, marking a new phase in the company’s transformation toward an AI-driven model.

Everest route blocked by massive glacier

A massive block of glacier is currently obstructing the main climbing route on Mount Everest, raising concerns as the peak climbing season begins in Nepal. Positioned just below Camp 1, the ice formation—known as a serac—stands about 30 meters high and has proven impossible to bypass safely. Teams of “icefall doctors,” responsible for securing ropes and ladders along the route, say there is no viable alternative path for now. Their only option is to wait for the ice to naturally weaken and collapse, which they hope will happen within days. This unexpected obstacle has delayed preparations significantly. By this time of year, routes are typically secured up to Camp 3, but work has stalled roughly 600 meters below Camp 1. The delay could compress the already short climbing window, increasing the risk of overcrowding as climbers attempt to summit within […]

Trump sees UK royal visit boosting ties

US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism that the upcoming state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla could help strengthen ties between the United States and the United Kingdom. Speaking in a phone interview, Trump described the British monarch as “a fantastic man” and said the visit would have a positive impact on bilateral relations. The four-day trip, scheduled to begin next week, will include meetings at the White House and an address by the King to Congress. The visit comes at a time of visible tensions between Washington and London, particularly over the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Trump also commented on his relationship with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, suggesting the British leader could improve his standing if he adjusted his policies on immigration and energy. Starmer, however, has maintained that his decisions are guided by national […]

Apple at 50: Hits and Misses in Tech

Few companies have shaped everyday technology as profoundly as Apple. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the company has grown from a small garage startup founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak into one of the most influential brands in the world. Today, Apple products are used by billions globally. Analysts say this success is driven not only by innovation but also by branding. The company positioned its devices as lifestyle products, creating an emotional connection with users. While Apple continues to thrive under CEO Tim Cook, some observers believe the pace of groundbreaking innovation has slowed since the death of Steve Jobs. Instead, the company has focused more on refining its existing product ecosystem. Major successes One of Apple’s earliest breakthroughs was the iPod, launched in 2001. It transformed how people listened to music by simplifying digital storage and introducing seamless […]

UK trials social media limits for teens

The UK government is set to test new ways of limiting teenagers’ use of social media, as concerns grow over its impact on young people’s wellbeing. Under the pilot scheme, around 300 teenagers will take part in trials designed to assess different restrictions on app usage. The initiative, led by Liz Kendall, aims to gather real-world evidence before deciding on potential nationwide measures. Participants will be divided into four groups. One group will have social media apps completely blocked, effectively simulating a full ban. Two others will face partial restrictions—either a daily usage cap of one hour or a night-time block between 9pm and 7am. A fourth group will act as a control, continuing normal usage. The trial will evaluate how these measures affect teenagers’ daily lives, including sleep, school performance and family interactions. Parents and children involved will also […]

US trial targets social media over child mental health

A high-profile court case has opened in California, putting major social media platforms under scrutiny over claims that their products negatively affect the mental health of children and teenagers. The trial, taking place at the Los Angeles Superior Court, focuses on allegations against Instagram and YouTube, accused of deliberately designing features that encourage excessive use among young users. The case was brought by a plaintiff identified as K.G.M., whose identity is protected because the alleged harm occurred while she was a minor. In his opening statement, the plaintiff’s lawyer told the jury that the platforms were intentionally engineered to keep children engaged for as long as possible. He argued that design choices such as algorithms, notifications and autoplay functions were created with the goal of maximizing user attention, without sufficient consideration for the psychological risks to young people. According to […]

Ofcom probes X over Grok’s sexualised images

Ofcom has opened a formal probe into X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, amid concerns that its artificial intelligence chatbot Grok is being used to generate and distribute sexualised and illegal images. The UK communications regulator said it had received “deeply troubling reports” that Grok was being used to create images showing people undressed without their consent, as well as sexualised images involving children. Such material is illegal under UK law. According to the regulator, if X is found to have breached its legal obligations, it could face a fine of up to £18 million or 10% of its global annual turnover, whichever is higher. Ofcom also has the power to ask a court to order UK internet providers to block access to X if the company fails to comply. The BBC has contacted X for a […]

UK criticises X over paid Grok image edits

The UK government has sharply criticised Elon Musk’s social media platform X for restricting Grok AI image-editing tools to paying users, saying the move shows a lack of respect for victims of misogyny and sexual violence. Downing Street said the decision effectively turns a tool that has been used to create illegal and abusive images into a paid service, rather than addressing the harm it has caused. The comments follow widespread anger after Grok was found to be digitally altering photos of people, often women, by removing their clothing without consent. Government officials noted that while the feature is now blocked for free users on X, it remains available through Grok’s separate app and website. The prime minister’s spokesperson said the change proved the company could act quickly when it chose to, but insisted stronger action was still required. Sir […]
