Dua Lipa Files $15m Lawsuit Against Samsung

Article arrow_drop_down

Pop star Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung, accusing the technology giant of using her image on television packaging in the United States without authorization.

The complaint, filed in a California federal court, seeks $15m (£11m) in damages and alleges copyright infringement, trademark infringement and unlawful use of the singer’s likeness.

According to court documents, Samsung allegedly displayed a photograph of Dua Lipa’s face on packaging for several television models sold across the US. The singer’s legal team claims the company attempted to benefit commercially from her popularity and public image to boost product sales.

The disputed image was reportedly taken during Dua Lipa’s performance at the 2024 Austin City Limits Festival, with the lawsuit stating that the singer owns the copyright to the photograph.

Legal filings indicate that Dua Lipa became aware of the issue in June 2025 after fans began sharing photos of the television boxes online. Some social media users reportedly referred to the products as the “Dua Lipa TV Box”.

The lawsuit also highlights online reactions from fans, including comments suggesting people would purchase the television because her image appeared on the packaging.

Dua Lipa’s lawyers claim Samsung ignored several requests to stop using the image and failed to respond adequately to cease-and-desist notices.

The singer, who has multiple commercial partnerships with major international brands, regularly collaborates with fashion and luxury companies as part of endorsement agreements. Her legal team argues that unauthorized commercial use of her image damages the value of her brand and professional partnerships.

Samsung has not yet publicly responded to the allegations.

Dua Lipa remains one of the world’s most commercially successful pop artists. Her latest album, Radical Optimism, was released in 2024.

Thaksin’s release immediately reignited debate about his future influence in Thai politics, despite repeated claims from Pheu Thai officials that he plans to stay out of active political life. Ushuaia Faces Questions Over Hantavirus Outbreak

The southern Argentine city of Ushuaia, often promoted as the “End of the World” and a gateway to Antarctica, is facing growing international attention following the deadly hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius. The vessel, currently anchored near Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands, began its journey from Ushuaia on 1 April with 114 passengers and 61 crew members from 22 countries onboard. Since then, several infections and deaths linked to the Andes strain of hantavirus have been reported among passengers. Although investigators suspect the virus may have been contracted before the cruise departed, the exact source of the outbreak remains unclear. One leading theory points to a landfill site outside Ushuaia that attracts rodents and is frequently visited by tourists interested in birdwatching. Local authorities, however, strongly reject the idea that Tierra del Fuego province was the […]

New hantavirus cases linked to cruise ship

US and French authorities have confirmed new hantavirus cases among passengers repatriated from the cruise ship MV Hondius, which has been linked to a deadly outbreak near Spain’s Canary Islands. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, one American passenger tested positive for the virus after returning home. Another US passenger has also developed mild symptoms. Officials said both individuals travelled in special biocontainment units as a precaution. In France, Health Minister Stéphanie Rist confirmed that a French woman isolating in Paris had tested positive and that her condition was worsening. French health authorities have already traced 22 people who had close contact with her. The MV Hondius remains docked in the Canary Islands while international evacuation and repatriation operations continue. More than 90 passengers have now left the vessel and returned to their home countries under […]

Meta to cut 8,000 jobs amid AI push

Meta is preparing a major round of layoffs, with thousands of employees expected to lose their jobs next month as the company ramps up investment in artificial intelligence (AI). According to an internal memo shared with staff, the tech giant plans to cut about 10% of its workforce, representing roughly 8,000 positions. In addition, the company will halt recruitment for several thousand open roles, further reducing its overall headcount. This restructuring is largely driven by a sharp increase in spending on AI. Meta is expected to allocate around $135 billion to AI projects this year alone, an amount comparable to its total investment in the field over the past three years combined. The shift reflects the company’s ambition to accelerate development of advanced AI systems and remain competitive in the sector. The announcement follows earlier signals from CEO Mark Zuckerberg, […]

Apple at 50: Hits and Misses in Tech

Few companies have shaped everyday technology as profoundly as Apple. Today, Apple products are used by billions globally. Analysts say this success is driven not only by innovation but also by branding. The company positioned its devices as lifestyle products, creating an emotional connection with users. While Apple continues to thrive under CEO Tim Cook, some observers believe the pace of groundbreaking innovation has slowed since the death of Steve Jobs. UK trials social media limits for teens

The UK government is set to test new ways of limiting teenagers’ use of social media, as concerns grow over its impact on young people’s wellbeing. Under the pilot scheme, around 300 teenagers will take part in trials designed to assess different restrictions on app usage. The initiative, led by Liz Kendall, aims to gather real-world evidence before deciding on potential nationwide measures. Participants will be divided into four groups. One group will have social media apps completely blocked, effectively simulating a full ban. Two others will face partial restrictions—either a daily usage cap of one hour or a night-time block between 9pm and 7am. A fourth group will act as a control, continuing normal usage. The trial will evaluate how these measures affect teenagers’ daily lives, including sleep, school performance and family interactions. Parents and children involved will also […]

US trial targets social media over child mental health

A high-profile court case has opened in California, putting major social media platforms under scrutiny over claims that their products negatively affect the mental health of children and teenagers. The trial, taking place at the Los Angeles Superior Court, focuses on allegations against Instagram and YouTube, accused of deliberately designing features that encourage excessive use among young users. The case was brought by a plaintiff identified as K.G.M., whose identity is protected because the alleged harm occurred while she was a minor. In his opening statement, the plaintiff’s lawyer told the jury that the platforms were intentionally engineered to keep children engaged for as long as possible. He argued that design choices such as algorithms, notifications and autoplay functions were created with the goal of maximizing user attention, without sufficient consideration for the psychological risks to young people. According to […]

Ofcom probes X over Grok’s sexualised images

Ofcom has opened a formal probe into X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, amid concerns that its artificial intelligence chatbot Grok is being used to generate and distribute sexualised and illegal images. The UK communications regulator said it had received “deeply troubling reports” that Grok was being used to create images showing people undressed without their consent, as well as sexualised images involving children. Such material is illegal under UK law. According to the regulator, if X is found to have breached its legal obligations, it could face a fine of up to £18 million or 10% of its global annual turnover, whichever is higher. Ofcom also has the power to ask a court to order UK internet providers to block access to X if the company fails to comply. The BBC has contacted X for a […]

UK criticises X over paid Grok image edits

The UK government has sharply criticised Elon Musk’s social media platform X for restricting Grok AI image-editing tools to paying users, saying the move shows a lack of respect for victims of misogyny and sexual violence. Downing Street said the decision effectively turns a tool that has been used to create illegal and abusive images into a paid service, rather than addressing the harm it has caused. The comments follow widespread anger after Grok was found to be digitally altering photos of people, often women, by removing their clothing without consent. Government officials noted that while the feature is now blocked for free users on X, it remains available through Grok’s separate app and website. The prime minister’s spokesperson said the change proved the company could act quickly when it chose to, but insisted stronger action was still required. Sir […]
