Iwobi hopeful of quick return after injury blow

Article arrow_drop_down

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has expressed optimism that he will return to action soon after suffering a hamstring injury during Fulham’s recent Premier League clash with Brentford. The 29-year-old pulled up unchallenged while chasing a loose ball and was forced off shortly before half-time in the goalless draw at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Fulham manager Marco Silva initially described the setback as “really bad news”, but stressed that early indications suggested it was not a “serious, serious” hamstring problem. He said the club would have to wait for the results of a scan to determine the full extent of the damage, but remained hopeful that Iwobi could feature again before the end of the season.

Providing his own update, Iwobi admitted he was frustrated by the timing of the injury but revealed he is still able to walk despite a limp, which he considers a positive sign. The former Arsenal star added that he is “praying for a speedy recovery” and is doing light movement to keep active while waiting on medical assessments.

The injury is a major blow for Fulham, with Iwobi having been one of the team’s most consistent performers since returning from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He is expected to miss at least the next few fixtures, including the crunch clash against Aston Villa, as the Cottagers push to finish the campaign strongly.

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle and his backroom staff are also monitoring the situation closely, with Iwobi in line for selection for upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal. Medical experts suggest typical recovery from a hamstring strain can take between four and six weeks, but Iwobi’s durability in the past offers some hope of an earlier-than-expected return.

76 ISWAP commanders surrender as military intensifies offensive

Top commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, have surrendered to Nigerian troops alongside 76 fighters and their family members in the North-East. The surrender reportedly followed weeks of sustained air and ground offensives by troops of Operation Hadin Kai, which the military said had weakened the group’s command structure, logistics network and movement corridors. According to military authorities, the development marks a major setback for the insurgent group and reflects growing pressure inside its ranks. The surrendered commanders are being profiled and debriefed for intelligence purposes. Security officials said the information gathered from the defectors is expected to help troops identify remaining camps, arms caches and supply routes used by the terrorists. The military said the offensive will continue until all remaining insurgent enclaves in the North-East are dismantled.
