Trump Imposes New 10% Global Tariff

The United States has entered a new phase of trade tensions after President Donald Trump announced a 10% global tariff, replacing a set of duties recently struck down by the Supreme Court of the United States. The move comes days after the court ruled, in a 6–3 decision, that the president had exceeded his authority in imposing sweeping tariffs under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The justices concluded that Congress had not explicitly granted the executive branch the power to introduce such broad-based import taxes. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, emphasized that when Congress delegates tariff authority, it does so clearly and with defined limits. The ruling was supported by the court’s three liberal justices, along with conservative justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch. Justices Clarence Thomas, Brett Kavanaugh, and Samuel Alito dissented. […]

Police continue searches after Andrew’s arrest

Police officers continued searches on Friday at Royal Lodge, the former residence of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, a day after he was released under investigation. The 66-year-old was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and taken to a police station in Norfolk for questioning. He has firmly denied any wrongdoing. Released under investigation On Thursday evening, Thames Valley Police confirmed he had been released under investigation following several hours in custody. This status means he has not been charged and is not subject to bail conditions such as travel restrictions or curfews. However, the investigation remains active and further questioning is possible. As with any arrest, he would have been formally processed, including identity checks and routine custody procedures. In cases involving alleged white-collar offences, suspects are often held for several hours while initial inquiries and searches are carried out. […]

Austrian climber convicted over mountain death

An Austrian court has convicted an experienced mountaineer over the death of his girlfriend during a winter ascent of Grossglockner, the country’s highest peak. The defendant, identified as Thomas P in accordance with Austrian privacy rules, was found guilty of gross negligent manslaughter. The court handed him a five-month suspended prison sentence and imposed a fine of €9,600 (£8,400). His partner, Kerstin G, died from hypothermia during their climb in January 2025. In a statement cited by the BBC, the court said it took into account the defendant’s previously clean criminal record and the personal loss he had suffered. Judges also acknowledged the intense public scrutiny on social media, which they described as prejudicial. Presiding judge Norbert Hofer, an experienced climber who collaborates with mountain and helicopter rescue services in Tyrol, said Thomas P was a highly skilled alpinist. However, […]

UK foreign minister to meet Rubio over tensions at joint air base

Britain’s foreign minister Yvette Cooper will meet United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on Friday amid rising tensions over their joint military base on Diego Garcia. The talks follow President Donald Trump’s renewed criticism of the UK’s decision to cede sovereignty over the surrounding Chagos Islands to Mauritius. Under a deal agreed last year by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Britain will transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands while keeping control of the Diego Garcia base through a 99 year lease that guarantees continued US military access. Washington initially backed the arrangement, but Trump has since repeatedly attacked it, calling the move a “big mistake” and warning London not to “give away Diego Garcia.” The dispute has sharpened as the US steps up military deployments around Iran and weighs possible strikes against its nuclear and military facilities. British […]

Trump gives Iran 10 days to agree deal or face possible strike

United States President Donald Trump says the world will know within about 10 days whether his administration reaches a new deal with Iran or decides to launch military action. He warned that if diplomacy fails, Washington is prepared to respond with force. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said talks with Iran were “serious” but insisted any agreement must go beyond the previous nuclear deal. He wants tighter restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme, limits on its ballistic missiles and changes to its regional activities. The comments come as the United States continues a major military build up around Iran, moving additional warships, aircraft and troops into the region. American officials say the deployments are meant to deter Tehran and protect US personnel and allies. Iran has repeatedly denied seeking nuclear weapons and insists its programme is for peaceful […]

British couple jailed 10 years in Iran for spying

A British couple detained in Iran during a round-the-world motorcycle journey have been sentenced to 10 years in prison on espionage charges, according to their family. Lindsay and Craig Foreman were arrested in January 2025 while transiting through Iran. They were later formally accused of spying — allegations they strongly deny. The pair are being held separately in Evin Prison, a facility in Tehran widely criticised for detaining political prisoners and foreign nationals. The sentence was reportedly delivered by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court following a hearing in October that lasted around three hours. Family members say the couple were not permitted to present a defence. Lindsay Foreman’s son, Joe Bennett, said no evidence had been publicly produced to substantiate the accusations. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper described the ruling as “completely appalling and totally unjustifiable”. She pledged […]
