US Flags Rights, Justice Concerns in Nigeria; Presidency Defends Reforms

The United States has raised concerns over Nigeria’s human rights, justice system, and economic conditions, citing arbitrary arrests, prolonged pre-trial detentions, and erosion of wages due to naira depreciation. In its 2024 Country Report on Human Rights Practices, released by the Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour, Washington pointed to enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, and systemic failures in justice delivery as persistent challenges. The report referenced Amnesty International’s claims that the whereabouts of “dozens of young men detained at SARS Awkuzu,” in Anambra State remain unknown years after the police unit’s disbandment. It also noted that while Nigerian law requires detainees to be brought before a magistrate within 48 hours, violations by security forces remain common. It further highlighted problems of corruption, inadequate judges, and lack of logistics, saying:“Some detainees were held in pre-trial detention for […]

U.S. Cancels 6,000 Student Visas Over Law Violations, Security Concerns

The U.S. State Department has revoked more than 6,000 international student visas over alleged law violations, overstays, and security concerns, according to a statement to the BBC. Officials said most of the cases involved crimes such as assault, burglary, and driving under the influence, while about 200–300 visas were cancelled under terrorism-related provisions of U.S. immigration law. The move comes as President Donald Trump’s administration intensifies its immigration crackdown, with international students among those targeted. Some students who participated in pro-Palestinian protests were accused by officials of engaging in antisemitic behavior. Earlier this year, the administration temporarily halted student visa appointments, later resuming them with stricter screening rules. Applicants are now required to disclose their social media accounts for background checks. Visa officers were instructed to flag applicants who express hostility toward U.S. citizens, institutions, or values, or who support […]

Google to Pay $36m Fine in Australia Over Android Search Deals

Google has agreed to pay a US$36 million fine after admitting to anti-competitive agreements with two major Australian telecom firms, Telstra and Optus. Australia’s Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said the deals, in place between December 2019 and March 2021, required the telecom companies to pre-install only Google’s search engine on Android devices. In return, both firms received a share of Google’s advertising revenue. The ACCC described the arrangements as harmful to competition, noting they reduced consumer choice and potentially led to higher costs and poorer service. “Conduct that restricts competition is illegal in Australia,” said ACCC chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb. Google, which cooperated with the investigation, admitted the agreements were likely to have substantially lessened competition. The company said it was satisfied to have resolved the matter and stressed that such provisions were no longer part of its contracts. Both […]

Historic 300-Year-Old Paganini Violin to Feature at BBC Proms

A rare 300-year-old violin, once owned by legendary Italian composer Niccolò Paganini, will take center stage at the BBC Proms in London later this month. The violin, known as the Carrodus, was crafted in 1743 by master Italian maker Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù in Cremona, northern Italy. Valued at $20 million, it is one of only about 150 of his instruments still in existence. The instrument, loaned to South Korean violinist Inmo Yang by the Stretton Society—a philanthropic group that acquires rare instruments for top musicians—will be played publicly for the first time at the Royal Albert Hall on August 28. “I can’t believe how lucky I am to have this instrument. It’s one of the greatest violins ever made,” Yang told AFP, expressing his sense of duty to preserve its legacy by keeping it in use rather than locked […]
