Britain, France, 19 Others Condemn Israel’s West Bank Settlement Project

Britain, France, and 19 other countries have condemned Israel’s approval of a controversial settlement project in the occupied West Bank, describing it as “unacceptable and a violation of international law.” The joint statement, signed by the foreign ministers of 21 nations including Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain, and Sweden, urged Israel to immediately reverse its decision to develop the 12-square-kilometre E1 area east of Jerusalem. The plan, announced on Wednesday, would add 3,400 housing units between Jerusalem and the settlement of Maale Adumim. The signatories warned the project would “make a two-state solution impossible by dividing any Palestinian state and restricting Palestinian access to Jerusalem.” They said the move threatens security, fuels violence, and pushes peace further out of reach. The Palestinian Authority and UN Secretary-General António Guterres also denounced the decision, while Britain summoned Israeli ambassador Tzipi Hotovely to formally […]

PENGASSAN Calls for Urgent Reforms in Refineries

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has urged the Federal Government to implement urgent reforms in the nation’s refineries and warned against political interference in the oil and gas sector. Speaking at the ongoing 4th PENGASSAN and Labour Summit 2025 in Abuja, themed “Building a Resilient Oil and Gas Sector in Nigeria: Advancing HSE, ESG, Investment and Incremental Production,” PENGASSAN President Festus Osifo called for the adoption of a model similar to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), where the government holds minority stakes while private investors manage operations. “Government must divest majority control of the refineries, just as in the NLNG model, where private partners hold 51 per cent while government retains 49 per cent,” Osifo said, stressing that political meddling and inadequate tools have crippled efficiency. He cautioned that Nigeria’s 37 billion barrels […]

UNILAG Students Protest Hike in Private Hostel Fees

Students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) are protesting a sharp rise in accommodation costs at private hostels located on the Akoka campus. Several hostel operators reportedly increased their rents by nearly 40 percent ahead of the new academic session. For instance, a one-bedroom self-contained unit that previously cost ₦500,000 is now being rented for over ₦700,000 per year. Private hostels became popular last year after the federal government-owned official hostels underwent prolonged renovations. During that period, the university temporarily adopted online learning, with students returning in batches only to write their examinations. When contacted for clarification on the situation, UNILAG’s Head of Communication Unit, Alhaja Adejoke Alaga Ibraheem, declined to give an official response, directing all enquiries to the school’s communication unit email. It was further gathered that since the new academic session is yet to begin, the university […]

Yet only 26.7 per cent turned out to vote,” he noted. He urged young Nigerians to turn their numbers into electoral strength:“Your vote is your voice. Your ballot is your power.
