Nigerian students in UK rush for work visas amid deportation threat

Nigerian students in the United Kingdom are scrambling for legal options to remain in the country as their student visas near expiration, following a fresh warning from the UK government. In an emergency notice last Sunday, London revealed that about 10,000 international students had been contacted to leave after their visas lapsed. The move comes amid a surge in asylum claims, which tripled in the past year and accounted for 37% of all applications. Students made up the largest group of asylum seekers at 40%, ahead of work visa holders (29%) and visitors (24%). The government has launched a direct messaging campaign reminding students to leave once their visas expire. A message sent to affected students warned that asylum claims without merit would be “swiftly and robustly refused” and overstayers risked deportation. UK universities hosted 732,285 overseas students in the […]

Six killed, 20 trapped in Sudan gold mine collapse

At least six people have died and up to 20 others are feared trapped after a gold mine collapsed in northern Sudan, local authorities confirmed on Saturday. The incident happened on Friday in the Um Aud area, west of Berber city in River Nile state. Hassan Ibrahim Karar, executive director of Berber locality, said rescue efforts were underway but did not disclose the cause of the collapse. The accident highlights the dangers of artisanal and small-scale gold mining in Sudan, where poor safety standards and the use of hazardous chemicals pose serious risks to workers and nearby communities. Since the outbreak of fighting in April 2023 between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), both groups have heavily relied on the gold industry to fund their war efforts. Nearly all of Sudan’s gold is exported through the United […]

US President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order to create a blacklist of countries accused of unjustly detaining American citizens, introducing sweeping penalties including travel bans. The order establishes a new designation — “state sponsors of wrongful detention” — mirroring the existing US list of state sponsors of terrorism. “With this EO you are signing today, you are drawing a line in the sand that US citizens will not be used as bargaining chips,” Trump aide Sebastian Gorka told reporters in the Oval Office. The Trump administration did not immediately disclose the countries likely to be listed, but a senior US official confirmed that China, Iran, and Afghanistan were under review for what Washington calls “persistent hostage diplomacy.” Countries designated under the new system could face sanctions, export controls, and visa bans for officials complicit in wrongful imprisonment. World Cup Qualifier: Super Eagles Eye Crucial Revival vs Rwanda

Nigeria’s Super Eagles face Rwanda in Uyo on Saturday in what is widely regarded as a defining clash for their fragile 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. The three-time African champions are at a crossroads. Having missed the 2022 finals in Qatar, Nigeria now risk consecutive failures — a prospect that would severely dent the country’s proud footballing legacy. So far, the qualifiers have been frustrating. Despite conceding only one goal in six matches, Nigeria have been held to four draws, undermining their chances of topping Group C. For a squad stacked with talent, the lack of victories has left fans restless and anxious. Rwanda, meanwhile, arrive as underdogs but cannot be underestimated. They have lost two of their last four qualifiers and struggle away from home, dropping 60% of recent matches on the road. Yet their pace and discipline […]
