NUPENG Protests Dangote’s Alleged Anti-Union Practices

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has accused Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, of pursuing an “anti-union agenda” in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. In a joint statement released Friday in Abuja, NUPENG’s National President, Williams Akporeha, and Secretary General, Afolabi Olawale, alleged that Dangote and his cousin, Sayyu Dantata, were working to establish a monopoly that would undermine workers’ rights, unions, and economic justice. “NUPENG is seriously concerned and disturbed with the unconscionable business practices of Alhaji Sayyu Aliu Dantata and Alhaji Aliko Dangote who are scared of allowing unions to exist in their business outfits,” the statement read. The union expressed particular alarm over Dangote’s plan to import 10,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks for fuel distribution. According to NUPENG, new drivers recruited under this scheme are being compelled to sign agreements barring them […]

Super Eagles’ Adeleye: Stop mistaking me for Onana

Super Eagles goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye has urged the public to stop confusing him with Manchester United and Cameroon’s shot-stopper, Andre Onana. Adeleye, who is currently in camp with Nigeria ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa, clarified the issue during media interviews. “To the esteemed public, I wish to clarify a pressing matter regarding my identity. My name is Adebayo Adeleye, and I am a Nigerian goalkeeper. Unfortunately, some individuals have mistakenly called me Andre Onana, the renowned Cameroonian goalkeeper,” he said. While expressing respect for Onana, Adeleye stressed that both players have separate nationalities and career paths. “I kindly request that the public refrain from associating me with Andre Onana, as we are two distinct individuals. I am proud to be Adebayo Adeleye, a Nigerian, and I would appreciate it if my correct identity […]

Nigeria to launch NigComSat-2A, 2B for stronger connectivity

The Federal Government has announced plans to launch two new communication satellites, NigComSat-2A and NigComSat-2B, to enhance digital transformation, national security, and economic growth. The project, led by Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NigComSat Ltd), will replace NigComSat-1R, which has been in service since 2011 and is now expected to operate until January 2028 after a lifespan extension. Speaking at a one-day media training in Abuja, Engr. Messi hints at retirement after Argentina’s 3-0 win over Venezuela

Lionel Messi scored twice as Argentina defeated Venezuela 3-0 in Buenos Aires, in what could prove to be his final home World Cup qualifier. “Being able to finish this way here is what I’ve always dreamed of,” the 37-year-old captain said. “I’ve experienced a lot on this pitch, both good and not so good, but it’s always a joy to play in Argentina, in front of our fans.” Messi found the net in the 39th and 80th minutes, while Lautaro Martínez added another. He was denied a hat-trick when an effort was ruled out for offside. Pressed on his future, Messi admitted he may not play another World Cup after 2026:“Same as I said before about the World Cup — I don’t think I’ll play another. Because of my age, the most logical thing is that I won’t make it. […]

China to levy temporary tariffs on EU pork imports

China announced on Friday that it will impose temporary duties on pork imports from the European Union, citing evidence of dumping practices. The move follows a year-long investigation launched by Beijing after the EU began scrutinizing Chinese subsidies for its electric vehicle industry. “Investigating authorities have preliminarily determined that imports of pork and pig by-products originating in the European Union are being dumped,” the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement. As a result, Beijing will apply provisional anti-dumping measures in the form of deposits, with duties ranging from 15.6% to 62.4%, starting September 10. The duties remain provisional until the ministry concludes its full investigation, which has been extended until December. The decision adds new tension to already strained China–EU relations, shaped by disputes over trade, technology, and the fallout from Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Beijing has maintained […]

Simbi Wabote’s Refinery Network Reshapes Nigeria’s Oil Sector

When Simbi Wabote assumed leadership of Nigeria’s Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) in 2016, the country was still importing nearly all of its refined petroleum products despite being Africa’s top oil producer. The four state-owned refineries were barely functional, leaving Nigeria dependent on costly imports of fuel, diesel, and kerosene. Instead of waiting for government-driven rehabilitation, Wabote pioneered a bold partnership strategy that focused on modular refineries — smaller, faster-to-build facilities that offered quicker returns and operational efficiency. By 2023, his approach had delivered one operational refinery, three more under construction, and expanded gas processing and LPG infrastructure across multiple states. The strategy illustrated how government equity participation, rather than direct ownership, could accelerate industrial growth. Waltersmith BreakthroughThe first success came with NCDMB’s 30% equity stake in Waltersmith Refining & Petrochemical Company. Its 5,000 barrels-per-day modular refinery in Imo […]

Zelensky to Press Slovak PM on Russian Oil Imports

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will raise the issue of Russian oil supplies to Europe during a meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on Friday. Fico, who has been openly critical of Zelensky and recently met Russian President Vladimir Putin in China, is expected to arrive in the western Ukrainian city of Uzhgorod later in the day. The European Union banned most Russian oil imports after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, Slovakia and Hungary received exemptions to allow time to secure alternative supplies. This exemption has fueled tensions with Kyiv, which has long opposed the Druzhba pipeline carrying Russian oil to both countries. “America wants to seriously cut Russia’s income from energy exports — and that is the right path,” Zelensky said in a video address to an economic forum in Italy. “We will also discuss […]

Putin Vows to Target Western Troops if Sent to Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that any Western forces deployed to Ukraine would be considered “legitimate targets” for Russia’s military. His comments came Friday at an economic forum in Vladivostok, a day after Kyiv’s allies announced plans to send troops as part of a potential peace agreement. On Thursday, 26 countries led by France and Britain pledged to join a “reassurance force” on land, at sea, and in the air to monitor any eventual peace deal. The war, which began in February 2022, has already claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced millions, and devastated much of Ukraine’s east and south. “If some troops appear there, especially now during the fighting, we proceed from the premise that they will be legitimate targets,” Putin said, insisting that foreign deployments would not foster long-term peace. He also blamed Ukraine’s growing military […]
