Lagos State authorities have arrested six men for vandalising a government barricade at Obalende Roundabout, one of the city’s busiest traffic points.
The suspects were identified as Matthew Yohana (19), Jinadu Aliyu (33), Yohanna Adamu (29), Ayuba James (25), Umoru John (19), and Yakubu Ali (25).
Confirming the arrests in a statement on X, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the culprits would face prosecution in line with state laws.
“All arrested individuals will be prosecuted in line with the relevant extant law of the state. We will not allow criminality or lawlessness to undermine public safety or the environment in Lagos State,” Wahab said.
The crackdown comes amid heightened enforcement efforts to curb vandalism and maintain order in the state. Earlier this year, several young people were arrested in Ojota and Ikeja for damaging traffic signs and obstructing roadways. Authorities have also acted against groups involved in illegal street protests and destruction of public property across the metropolis.
The state government has intensified measures to safeguard public infrastructure, particularly at strategic junctions and commercial centres, where vandalism has become a recurring concern.
Officials urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting incidents that threaten public safety.
Reaffirming the government’s stance, Wahab added: “We are determined to uphold the rule of law and ensure that Lagos remains safe and conducive for all residents and visitors.”

World Cup gets cash boost as FIFA plans tough red card rules
FIFA has approved a major increase in World Cup cash distributions while also backing tougher red card rules ahead of this year’s tournament. The decisions were taken at a meeting of the FIFA Council in Vancouver, held before the organisation’s annual congress. Under the new plan, total World Cup payments to participating teams will rise to nearly 900 million dollars, covering prize money, preparation funds and club compensation. The four year World Cup cycle is projected to generate around 13 billion dollars for FIFA, allowing it to boost support to national associations.
