IPAC urges INEC to be cautious on ADC crisis, voter plan

The Inter Party Advisory Council has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to act with caution in handling the leadership crisis in the African Democratic Congress and its proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise. IPAC said recent steps taken by the commission risk deepening tension and raising doubts about its neutrality ahead of the 2027 elections. IPAC expressed concern over INEC’s decision to freeze recognition of the Senator David Mark led National Working Committee of the ADC while court cases on the party’s leadership are still pending. It noted that even where internal leadership is being contested, this does not mean there is a vacuum, and warned that removing names of party leaders from INEC’s portal at this stage appears premature. The council warned that such actions could set a troubling precedent and create avoidable instability in the party system if […]

US updates visa rules, adds 12 new bond countries

The United States has updated its visa rules by adding 12 more countries to its visa bond programme, which requires some applicants to pay a refundable bond of up to 15000 dollars before receiving certain visas. The policy mainly targets countries with high rates of visa overstays and is aimed at encouraging travellers to leave the US on time. Under the expanded scheme, qualified applicants from the newly listed countries must deposit the bond as an additional condition for securing mainly B1 and B2 visitor visas, covering business and tourism. The money is returned if the holder leaves the US on or before the expiry of their authorised stay or if they later decide not to travel. The 12 countries newly added to the active visa bond list are Cambodia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Grenada, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mongolia, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Papua New […]

Amupitan warns ADC against convention without INEC

Legal scholar and INEC chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, has warned the African Democratic Congress against going ahead with any national convention that is not monitored by the electoral commission. He said such a move would have serious legal consequences and could invalidate decisions taken at the gathering. His warning follows the commission’s recent decision to suspend recognition of all factions of the ADC’s national leadership, pending the outcome of court cases over the party’s chairmanship and National Working Committee. INEC had earlier announced that it would not monitor any meeting, congress or convention convened on behalf of the ADC until the Federal High Court in Abuja delivers its judgment. Amupitan explained that the Electoral Act requires INEC to monitor party congresses and conventions that elect or remove national officers, approve constitutions or amend party rules. Holding such events without INEC’s […]
