Actress Sarah Martins apologises over roadside charity cooking

Nollywood actress Sarah Martins has tendered a public apology for cooking and sharing food on a Lagos roadside as part of her charity outreach. Martins had recently come under fire from the Lagos State Government after videos showed her cooking on a road median and serving food to street children and other vulnerable people. The state, through its Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, warned that such activities violate environmental and sanitation regulations, as well as rules on the use of public infrastructure. In her apology, the actress acknowledged that, although her intentions were to help the less privileged, she now understands that using the road and public spaces in that manner was wrong and unsafe. She promised to comply with Lagos laws going forward and to move future charity programmes to approved or designated locations. Martins […]

Man City outclass Newcastle to reach FA Cup quarters

Manchester City delivered a dominant performance to beat Newcastle United 3–1 at St James’ Park and book their place in the FA Cup quarter finals. Pep Guardiola made sweeping changes, rotating 10 players from the side that drew with Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, yet his much changed team still had too much quality for the hosts. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe made four changes of his own after their late win over Manchester United, handing match winner Will Osula a rare start. Newcastle started strongly and were rewarded when Harvey Barnes gave them the lead with a smart finish after being picked out by Sandro Tonali. The advantage did not last long, however, as City levelled in bizarre fashion before half time when Jeremy Doku’s low ball ran through the box and Savinho allowed it to bounce off his […]

Ajayi returns from injury as Hull City lose to Millwall

Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi has returned to action for Hull City, featuring in their 3–1 home defeat to Millwall in the English Championship. Ajayi had been out since he sustained a hamstring injury while representing Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he picked up the knock during the third place match against Egypt. The game against Millwall was his first club appearance of 2026 as he continues his comeback to full fitness. Playing at the MKM Stadium, Hull City fell behind when Jake Cooper scored for Millwall from close range after a set piece situation. The hosts drew level through Joe Gelhardt, who finished from inside the box following a well worked move. Millwall, however, regained control in the second half. Mihailo Ivanovic restored their lead with a close range effort before Josh Coburn sealed the […]

Arsenal edge Mansfield to reach FA Cup quarter finals

Arsenal battled past a spirited Mansfield Town side to win 2–1 away and secure a place in the FA Cup quarter finals. The victory keeps alive their push for a historic quadruple this season. Mikel Arteta heavily rotated his team for the fifth round tie, making nine changes from the side that beat Brighton in midweek and switching to a back three. His line up included teenagers Max Dowman and Marli Salmon, making Arsenal the first Premier League club to start a competitive game with two players aged 16 or under. Despite early pressure from the League One club, Arsenal took the lead just before half time. Noni Madueke saw his initial shot saved but curled the rebound into the far corner to register the Gunners’ 100th goal of the season in all competitions. Mansfield responded strongly after the break. NLC flags alleged N20bn contract irregularities in TCN

The Nigeria Labour Congress has raised alarm over what it describes as questionable contracts worth about N20 billion allegedly awarded by the Transmission Company of Nigeria. According to the NLC, the contracts are linked to projects under TCN’s performance improvement and transmission expansion programmes, some of which are funded by international development partners. The labour body is worried that procurement processes may have been compromised and that value for money might not be guaranteed on the affected projects. The Congress is reported to have pointed to issues around contract packaging, cost variations and compliance with due process rules as areas of concern. It fears that any abuse in the handling of these contracts could undermine ongoing efforts to stabilise and expand Nigeria’s transmission grid. TCN recently disclosed that over 1.3 billion dollars worth of donor funded transmission projects are ongoing […]

Disu, Oyedele seen as boosting security, financial governance

A recent opinion piece has praised the appointments of Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu and Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun’s successor in finance reforms, Zacch Adedeji Oyedele, as key moves to strengthen Nigeria’s security and economic management. The article notes that Disu replaced Dr Doris Uzoka Anite as Inspector General after the Police Council ratified his appointment, and that his choice was widely welcomed by security stakeholders and many Nigerians. It argues that putting an experienced crime fighter in charge of the police should help reinvigorate the force and support President Bola Tinubu’s push for state and community policing. Disu is described as a career officer with strong operational experience, having led units such as the Special Anti Robbery Squad in Ondo and Oyo States and the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos. The […]

Tinubu’s opponents behind Kalu certificate smear, says ex commissioner

A former Abia State Commissioner for Finance and Economic Planning, Dr Philip Nto, has alleged that opponents of President Bola Tinubu are behind the recent certificate fraud accusations leveled against Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu. Nto claimed the allegations are part of a calculated smear campaign aimed at weakening Kalu because of his key role in mobilising support for Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress in Abia State. He wondered why questions about Kalu’s academic records are surfacing now, despite his long history in public office. Kalu is accused by some civil society groups of irregularities in his academic qualifications, including claims that he attended the Nigerian Law School while also doing his National Youth Service, two programmes that are supposed to run separately. The Deputy Speaker has denied any wrongdoing and described the allegations as […]

FG weighs options as Iran war pushes petrol above N1,000

The Federal Government is assessing its economic and diplomatic options as the war involving Iran, the United States and Israel begins to hit Nigerians through higher fuel prices and fresh pressure on the economy. Officials are closely tracking developments in the Middle East, where attacks on oil facilities, shipping disruptions and tensions around strategic waterways have driven up global crude prices. The conflict has already pushed Brent crude well above Nigeria’s 2026 budget benchmark, raising both risks and opportunities for Africa’s largest oil producer. On the domestic front, petrol prices have crossed or neared N1,000 per litre in many locations, with queues reappearing at filling stations across parts of the country. Marketers and analysts link the spike to higher international crude and freight costs, as well as supply constraints and the impact of the conflict on global refinery output and […]

US Israel strike Iranian oil depots, four killed

United States and Israeli forces have carried out joint airstrikes on several Iranian oil facilities, killing four people and sparking large fires around Tehran and the neighbouring Alborz province. Iranian officials said the overnight attacks targeted at least five oil related sites, including storage depots and a transfer facility that are part of the country’s fuel infrastructure. The strikes hit locations in and around the capital, with explosions reported near major depots and refineries. According to Iranian state media and local authorities, four personnel, including oil tanker drivers, were confirmed dead, while several installations suffered varying levels of damage. Firefighters and emergency teams were deployed to contain the blazes and prevent further spread of spilled fuel. Despite the damage, Iranian officials insisted there was no immediate shortage of fuel and said distribution to the public would continue. However, images and […]
