The Nigerian Army has honoured fallen soldiers and shown support for troops wounded in combat.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, presented insurance cheques to families of fallen personnel and injured soldiers during the opening of the Army’s First Bi-Annual Conference 2026 in Abuja.
He said the gesture shows the Army’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their families. He also praised soldiers for their courage, discipline, and service in difficult security operations across the country.
Shaibu paid tribute to soldiers who died in the line of duty, describing them as heroes whose sacrifice helped protect the nation. He said the Army will continue to support the families they left behind.
The Army chief also said wounded troops will continue to receive proper medical care, including evacuation where necessary, both within and outside Nigeria.
He said the Army is working to expand its formations across the country, improve welfare, strengthen infrastructure, and support civil-military relations. According to him, these steps are part of efforts to make the force more effective in carrying out its duties.
The Army said it will continue to honour sacrifice, support affected families, and stand by wounded soldiers who remain part of its service to the nation.

Rail Licence Not for New Track Construction SWDC
The South West Development Commission has explained that its newly secured rail licence does not allow it to build new rail lines. The commission said the licence is meant for rail operations, not construction. It will allow the agency to run passenger and freight services on existing rail corridors. Officials said the approval is part of efforts to improve transport links across the South West and support trade, movement, and economic growth in the region. The clarification comes after some reports suggested that the licence would give the commission power to construct new tracks. The commission said that is not the case. According to the agency, the licence will help it work with existing rail infrastructure while exploring ways to expand transport services in the region. The commission said its goal is to support regional development by making travel and […]

Primaries: APC Reps fight back after ticket losses
A number of All Progressives Congress (APC) members of the House of Representatives who lost their return tickets in the just‑concluded primaries are fighting back through legal challenges and internal party pressure. At least 26 incumbent lawmakers are at the centre of the brewing crisis, accusing party leaders and primary election officials of manipulation, imposition and disenfranchisement. Some aggrieved Reps have petitioned the APC national leadership and primary appeals panels, demanding the cancellation or review of results in their constituencies. They allege irregularities such as last‑minute changes to delegates’ lists, vote‑buying, intimidation of voters and the imposition of consensus candidates without proper consultation. Others are turning to the courts, filing suits to challenge the conduct of primaries or to seek recognition as the authentic candidates. However, analysts note that the amended Electoral Act now prevents aspirants who lost party primaries […]
