Ghana MP Questions ‘Rushed’ Removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and Vice Chairman of the Subsidiary Legislation Committee, has strongly criticized the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He described the move as procedurally flawed, unfair, and rushed. President John Mahama on September 1, 2025, dismissed Chief Justice Torkornoo with immediate effect over alleged “stated misbehaviour,” following recommendations from a constitutional committee established under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution. The decision came just hours after the President received the committee’s report on a petition filed by Ghanaian citizen Daniel Ofori. Notably, this was only one of three petitions submitted against the Chief Justice. Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Baffour Awuah questioned the speed and selective handling of the petitions, noting that there is no constitutional requirement demanding such urgency. “In the absence of timelines, what was the committee in a […]

About fifty military officers who arrived at the scene were unable to gain access to the town. The youth insisted that they have mined on their ancestral land for decades and will not allow it to be taken over by outsiders. Richmond Osei, leader of the youth group, explained that they are not involved in illegal mining but community mining. He accused Asanko Mines of using military intimidation to forcefully claim the land. “This large-scale mining company has been here for years, but there’s no development in our […]

Nana Yaa Jantuah Calls Out MultiChoice Ghana Over Subscription Pricing Dispute

Presidential staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah has weighed in on the ongoing standoff between MultiChoice Ghana and the government, urging the pay-TV operator to reconsider its stance in the public interest. Speaking on Prime Insights, the former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) said if MultiChoice feels excessively burdened by regulatory demands, it should simply cease operations. “This is a sovereign nation, and you are coming here to do business because you are earning money. So why are you here? If you’re not making a profit, you should just say, ‘You are stressing us, so we are folding up.’ The fact that you are still here means there is some kind of benefit that endures from your operations. So why don’t you calm down and say, ‘This is your country. I’m here,’” she remarked. Jantuah argued that MultiChoice’s continued […]
