Presidential staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah has weighed in on the ongoing standoff between MultiChoice Ghana and the government, urging the pay-TV operator to reconsider its stance in the public interest.
Speaking on Prime Insights, the former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) said if MultiChoice feels excessively burdened by regulatory demands, it should simply cease operations.
“This is a sovereign nation, and you are coming here to do business because you are earning money. So why are you here? If you’re not making a profit, you should just say, ‘You are stressing us, so we are folding up.’ The fact that you are still here means there is some kind of benefit that endures from your operations. So why don’t you calm down and say, ‘This is your country. I’m here,’” she remarked.
Jantuah argued that MultiChoice’s continued presence in Ghana is proof of profitability and insisted that the company must act responsibly. She also dismissed claims that government pressure amounts to political interference.
“It has nothing to do with politics. There is no bullying anywhere,” she said, stressing that the matter should be viewed as one of corporate responsibility and public interest.
Her comments come at a time when Communications Minister Sam Nartey George is leading negotiations with MultiChoice over what officials describe as “unjustifiably high” subscription prices. The dispute has drawn widespread public attention, with many Ghanaians calling for relief on monthly DStv bills.
This is not the first time Nana Yaa Jantuah has taken aim at MultiChoice. In August, she criticized the broadcaster for charging premium fees while offering outdated foreign content, adding her voice to growing demands for price reductions.
As talks between government and MultiChoice continue, the spotlight remains firmly on whether subscription costs will be lowered in response to rising public pressure.
