West Ham Co-Chair David Sullivan Resigns Amid Historic Allegations

Article arrow_drop_down

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has resigned as joint-chairman and director of the club effective immediately, saying he will fight “factually incorrect and entirely false” decades-old allegations about his private life.

Sullivan, 77, announced his resignation in a statement on Saturday, saying he made the decision “with a heavy heart” but out of “love, respect, and responsibility” toward a football club and fan base that deserve absolute unity.

The club stated it had been informed of the impending publication of serious historical allegations and that none of the allegations pertain to West Ham United or its operations. Sullivan has denied any claims of illegal conduct.

Following the death of his business partner David Gold in January 2023, Sullivan became the club’s largest individual shareholder with a 38.8% stake. Sullivan and Gold took on the roles of joint chairmen after finalizing their acquisition of West Ham in January 2010.

Interim CEO Karim Virani, who will report to the current board of directors, will continue to oversee the daily operations of the club while an update regarding the future composition of the board of directors will be shared in due time.

Sullivan said he would not be making any further public comments at this time but reserved all legal rights concerning any false or defamatory claims, including plans to sue the BBC for libel over the allegations.
