Two 13-year-old girls were seriously injured following a violent incident at a secondary school in Schongau, a town in Upper Bavaria, Germany. Police have arrested a 16-year-old suspect and launched a major security operation as investigations continue.
Authorities said the suspect was found carrying both a knife and a firearm and is believed to have acted alone. The individual is currently in police custody while investigators work to determine the motive behind the attack.
The injured girls were taken for medical treatment and are not believed to be in life-threatening condition. Police are still assessing whether other people were affected and the full extent of any additional injuries.
Officials have not yet confirmed the exact weapon used during the incident. However, Bavaria’s Interior Minister, Joachim Herrmann, said he believes the two victims were stabbed, although police have not officially verified that information.
Investigators have not released the identity of the suspect or confirmed any connection to Welfen-Gymnasium. According to the interior minister, there are unverified indications that the suspect may have previously attended the school and had received psychiatric treatment.
Police have described the incident as a possible “rampage” and continue to gather evidence at the scene. A support centre has been established at a local fire station to assist parents and relatives of students during the investigation.
Founded in 1887, Welfen-Gymnasium has a long history in Schongau. Originally established as a girls’ school, it has operated as a coeducational institution for the past four decades.

A court in Berlin has sentenced a 41-year-old palliative care doctor to life in prison after finding him guilty of murdering 15 patients under his care. Identified only as Johannes M. in accordance with German privacy laws, the doctor was convicted of killing 12 women and three men between September 2021 and July 2024. FG mourns Nigerian medical graduate killed in Russian airstrike
The Federal Government has expressed sadness over the death of a Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, who was killed in a Russian airstrike in Ukraine. Marian died after she was badly injured during an attack in Kharkiv. Reports said she later died in Germany while receiving treatment.
