US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism that the upcoming state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla could help strengthen ties between the United States and the United Kingdom.
Speaking in a phone interview, Trump described the British monarch as “a fantastic man” and said the visit would have a positive impact on bilateral relations. The four-day trip, scheduled to begin next week, will include meetings at the White House and an address by the King to Congress.
The visit comes at a time of visible tensions between Washington and London, particularly over the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Trump also commented on his relationship with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, suggesting the British leader could improve his standing if he adjusted his policies on immigration and energy.
Starmer, however, has maintained that his decisions are guided by national interest. He recently reiterated the UK’s position of avoiding deeper involvement in the Iran conflict, despite pressure from the US administration.
During the interview, Trump also criticized the level of support provided by allies, stating that while their involvement was not necessary, it would have been welcomed. He framed previous calls for support as a way to assess the commitment of partner nations.
Beyond diplomacy, Trump briefly addressed his ongoing legal dispute with the BBC, warning the broadcaster to be cautious as it defends itself against his defamation lawsuit linked to a documentary.
The state visit is expected to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence and highlight longstanding ties between the two countries, even as policy differences continue to shape the relationship.

Authorities say around 12,000 people have already been evacuated, while another 8,800 residents and visitors are being relocated as a precaution.
