Zamfara Mining Pit Collapse Traps Several Miners

The Zamfara State Emergency Management Agency (ZSEMA) has confirmed the collapse of mining pits in Kadauri community, Maru Local Government Area, trapping several artisanal miners. The incident occurred late Thursday night after heavy rainfall in the area, which weakened the soil and caused the pits to cave in. ZSEMA’s Executive Secretary, Amb. Bala Ahmad, told reporters in Gusau on Friday that he was in a meeting with stakeholders to assess the situation and would provide more details later. Community leaders said many miners were still trapped, though the exact number of victims remains unknown. Some injured survivors have been taken to Maru General Hospital for treatment. Rescue operations are ongoing, with locals and emergency officials working together to save those still buried under the collapsed pits. Mining accidents are frequent in Zamfara, where unregulated artisanal mining exposes workers to dangerous […]

Aston Villa secure first Europa League win, Rangers suffer fresh setback

Aston Villa finally found relief from their poor start to the season with a 1-0 victory over Bologna to launch their Europa League campaign on Thursday, while Rangers boss Russell Martin came under growing pressure after a damaging home defeat to Genk. Despite going winless in their first five Premier League fixtures, Villa were tipped among the Europa League favourites, thanks to their strong European run last season and manager Unai Emery’s pedigree as a four-time winner of the competition. Villa captain John McGinn struck in the 13th minute, drilling a low shot into the corner to secure all three points against the Coppa Italia holders. However, doubts around the squad’s form persist. Ollie Watkins, still without a goal this season, missed a penalty after coming off the bench, his weak effort easily saved by goalkeeper Łukasz Skorupski. Bologna came […]

PDP Govs Slam ADC Over Zamfara Meeting Criticism

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has defended its recent meeting in Zamfara State, accusing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) of politicising insecurity instead of showing empathy to victims of bandit attacks. The ADC had criticised the PDP for holding a political meeting in Zamfara, only days after dozens of residents were killed by bandits. In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party accused the PDP governors of being insensitive and urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara. ADC said: “Instead of rallying around their colleague to help stop the killings, PDP governors staged a political show in a state still mourning its dead. Their pictures in ceremonial attire, smiling for the camera, were insensitive.” Responding, the Director-General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Emmanuel Agbo, described ADC’s comments as “irresponsible,” […]
