Ebola Risk High Inside DR Congo No Pandemic Emergency WHO Says

The World Health Organization has said that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo poses a high risk inside the country but does not represent a global pandemic emergency. WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made this statement on Wednesday after meeting with the agency's emergency committee. He confirmed that the outbreak is a public health emergency of international concern but said it does not meet the criteria for a pandemic emergency. The outbreak is concentrated in eastern Ituri province of DR Congo. Health officials have recorded about 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths so far. Two suspected cases have also been reported in neighbouring Uganda. WHO assesses the risk as high at the national and regional levels but low at the global level. China denounces Taiwan foreign minister’s Switzerland visit amid WHO meeting

China has denounced a planned visit to Switzerland by Taiwan’s foreign minister, saying the trip, timed to coincide with the World Health Organization’s annual assembly in Geneva, violates the One China principle. Beijing has already blocked Taiwan from participating in the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) as an observer, but Taipei has vowed to send a delegation for meetings outside the official gathering. A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry said Taiwan’s outreach in Switzerland amounts to “separatist” activity and accused the island’s government of using the global health forum to push for “independence under the pretext of health cooperation.” The spokesperson reiterated that the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China and that Taiwan is an “inalienable” part of its territory. China’s opposition comes after it formally informed the WHO that it would […]

UK medics parachute to virus-hit island

British Army medical teams have parachuted onto the remote island of Tristan da Cunha to assist a British resident suspected of being infected with hantavirus following the outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius. Hantavirus outbreak not like start of COVID pandemic – WHO

The World Health Organization has said the current hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship off Cabo Verde is serious but not comparable to the early stages of the COVID 19 pandemic. Health officials stressed that, based on what is known about hantaviruses, the risk of a global crisis similar to COVID is low. As of 4 May 2026, seven cases connected to the Dutch flagged MV Hondius cruise ship have been identified, including two laboratory confirmed hantavirus infections and five suspected cases. Three deaths have been recorded, one patient is critically ill, and three others have reported milder symptoms.
