Pope John Paul II attacker removed from Turkish town

Turkish authorities have removed Mehmet Ali Agca, the man who tried to assassinate Pope John Paul II in 1981, from the town of Iznik ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s visit. Local media reported that Agca had travelled to the northwestern town hoping to briefly meet the new pope during his historic trip. Agca, a Turkish national, shot and seriously wounded John Paul II in St Peter’s Square in May 1981 and later received a life sentence in Italy before being transferred to Ankara to complete his term. He was released in 2010 after spending about 29 years in prison. In statements from Iznik, Agca said he wanted to “welcome the pope” and expressed hope that they could sit down and talk for a few minutes in Iznik or Istanbul. Iran Seeks Foreign Help as Fire Ravages UNESCO Forests

Iran has sought foreign assistance to combat a large fire ravaging the UNESCO-listed Hyrcanian forests in the north. Stretching 1,000 kilometers along the Caspian Sea into Azerbaijan, the ancient forests—unique for their 25–50 million-year age and 3,200 plant species—were recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2019. The blaze, allegedly sparked by hunters in Mazandaran province, reignited on November 15 after an earlier outbreak was quelled. Iran’s government urgently requested help from friendly countries, with Turkey dispatching planes, a helicopter, and specialists. If necessary, Iran said it would seek aid from Russia. The country also faces its worst drought in six decades, making firefighting efforts extremely complex. UNESCO highlights the forests’ rare, endemic, and endangered species, vital to Persian heritage and biodiversity. Iranian scientists and officials warn the fire risks irreparable natural and cultural loss, urging accelerated international support.

Sheikh Gumi Denies Fleeing Nigeria to Turkey to Escape Trump

Controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has denied social media rumors claiming he fled Nigeria to hide in Turkey due to fears of US President Donald Trump’s threat of military intervention over alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria. Gumi, currently in Turkey giving interviews, provided proof that his visa was obtained weeks before Trump’s November 1 tweet. Photos online had fueled suspicions, with users speculating Gumi’s ties to suspected terrorists led him to escape. Gumi called such claims “melancholy, concocted lies,” emphasizing Trump “has no power over us.” Gumi argued accusations of Christian genocide are “Islamophobia” and manipulation, sharing a message from a doctor alleging fake mass killings in the Middle Belt. He criticized Trump for spreading “dangerously deceptive” claims about violence in Nigeria. Gumi urged Nigerians not to trust external claims of genocide, invoking past examples of misinformation and insisting […]

Syria’s Jihadist-Turned-President Caps Historic Transformation with White House Visit

Less than a year after a lightning rise to power, Syria’s President Ahmad al-Sharaa visits the White House, marking a dramatic shift from his past as a jihadist fighter to international statesman. The visit, the first by a Syrian head of state, comes as al-Sharaa aims to reshape Syria’s foreign relations and end diplomatic isolation imposed during the Assad regime. Al-Sharaa, formerly an Islamist insurgent who battled US forces in Iraq, later toppled the decades-long regime of Bashar al-Assad through a surprise offensive. He now advocates for lifting US sanctions and seeks American support to push Israel to halt attacks and withdraw from southern Syria. Despite some sanctions lifted after a Saudi-brokered Trump-Al-Sharaa meeting in May, the toughest US measures require congressional sign-off. The young leader is balancing ties between Moscow and Western states, conscious of Russia’s military influence and […]

18 detained in Turkey over football referees betting scandal

Eighteen people have been detained in Turkey as part of a widening investigation into referees suspected of betting on football matches, the Istanbul prosecutor’s office said on Friday. Authorities have issued arrest warrants for 21 individuals, including 17 referees and the president of a first division club. The prosecutor’s office did not specify how many referees were among the 18 currently being questioned. The probe focuses on allegations of match-fixing and abuse of power within Turkish football. Last week, the Disciplinary Council of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) suspended 149 referees accused of violating a strict ban on betting. The suspensions, which range from eight to twelve months, did not specify whether any of the referees had wagered on matches they officiated. A previous TFF investigation into 571 referees across professional leagues found that 152 of them — including 22 […]

Afghanistan, Pakistan Agree to Ceasefire After Border Clashes

Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire, ending days of deadly fighting along their shared border that killed dozens and injured hundreds. The truce was mediated by Qatar and Turkey during talks held in Doha. Both nations have pledged to respect each other's sovereignty and refrain from hostile actions. A key part of the agreement is that Afghanistan will not support militant groups carrying out attacks against Pakistan. Both sides have also promised not to target each other's security forces, civilians, or critical infrastructure. Pakistan's Defense Minister confirmed the deal, stating that "cross-border terrorism from Afghan territory will cease immediately." The Taliban government in Afghanistan responded positively to the outcome. The two countries are scheduled to meet again in Istanbul on October 25th to discuss the details of the agreement further.
