Police Council confirms Olatunji Disu as substantive IGP
The Nigeria Police Council has unanimously approved the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector General of Police. The council, chaired by President Bola Tinubu and made up of the 36 state governors, the chairman of the Police Service Commission and the IGP, reached the decision at a brief meeting in the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja. Disu was appointed acting IGP on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun, and has now been confirmed as the 23rd police chief since Nigeria’s independence. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the confirmation complies with the Police Act 2020 and that there is no further need for Senate screening.
