Veteran actress Remi Surutu has defended President Bola Tinubu’s administration over the recent surge in fuel prices, saying the hikes are driven by global forces and not by the president or his government .
Surutu spoke at the launch of EKO57, a support group created to mobilise backing for Tinubu’s second term bid, where she argued that decisions by world leaders largely determine petrol prices worldwide .
She recalled confronting someone who blamed Tinubu for the fuel hike, insisting that the president is not responsible for the rise in petrol costs and that fuel pricing is influenced by international actors and market dynamics .
According to her, many Nigerians wrongly assume that Tinubu controls fuel prices, whereas the increases reflect wider global economic and political developments beyond the direct control of the Nigerian government .
Surutu reaffirmed her long standing support for Tinubu and urged Nigerians to exercise their democratic rights freely, without intimidation, especially as political discussions intensify ahead of the next election cycle .
She described Tinubu, his wife and their children as very good people and expressed disappointment over what she sees as a lack of unity within the Yoruba community .
The actress lamented that some Yorubas are quick to condemn themselves and their own leaders instead of reflecting on the broader situation in the world and recognising that Nigerians are still relatively better off in some respects .
Surutu encouraged Nigerians to take a step back, look at global events and avoid rushing to place all blame on Tinubu for economic hardships such as fuel price hikes .

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reduced the gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) by N75 per litre, bringing the new rate to N1,175 per litre from the previous N1,250.
