Trump Says Iran Deal Largely Negotiated Dispute Over Strait Reopening

US President Donald Trump has announced that a peace deal with Iran has been "largely negotiated" and that the Strait of Hormuz will be opened as part of the agreement, though Tehran has disputed the claim that control of the waterway will change. Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States, the Islamic Republic of Iran and various other Middle East countries including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain and mediator Pakistan has been largely negotiated and is subject to finalisation. The deal reportedly includes provisional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days as a confidence-building measure, during which Iran would not charge tolls for ships transiting the waterway and would clear mines previously laid in the Hormuz Strait to allow free passage. In exchange, the US would […]

Zelenskyy Expands Gulf Defence Partnerships

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a notable visit to Saudi Arabia in March, arriving in a black outfit and walking across a lilac carpet in what observers described as a carefully staged diplomatic moment. He said the trip was aimed at “strengthening the protection of lives,” highlighting Ukraine’s effort to expand international security partnerships amid its ongoing war with Russia. Zelenskyy’s visit formed part of a broader push by Kyiv to position itself as a global hub for battlefield-tested drone warfare expertise. Ukraine has increasingly showcased its military experience to Gulf states, particularly in countering drone and missile threats, in an effort to build strategic and defence-related partnerships. According to Ukrainian officials, agreements have now been reached with Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar to share drone technology and operational know-how. These countries have themselves faced missile and drone […]

UAE to exit OPEC after nearly 60 years

The United Arab Emirates has announced it will withdraw from OPEC and the broader OPEC+ next month, ending nearly six decades of membership. Authorities say the move is intended to give the country greater flexibility in managing its oil production, following significant investments aimed at expanding capacity. By operating outside the group’s quota system, the UAE will be able to respond more freely to global energy demand. The decision is widely viewed as a major development for the oil market. Some analysts consider it a significant setback for OPEC, which could lose influence as one of its key and historically compliant members exits. The UAE currently contributes a notable share of the group’s production capacity. Founded in 1960, OPEC was created to coordinate oil output among major exporting countries to stabilise prices and ensure steady revenues. The UAE joined in […]

Five ways the Strait of Hormuz affects global oil supply

The potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz poses a major threat to global oil supply, given its role as one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes. The narrow channel connects the Persian Gulf to international markets and serves as a gateway for crude exports from key Middle East producers. Here are five ways the Strait of Hormuz affects global oil supply: Massive disruption to global oil flowAround 20 per cent of the world’s daily oil supply, estimated at roughly 20 million barrels, passes through the strait. A closure would immediately halt a significant portion of exports from major producers such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, creating a sudden supply shock in global markets. Limited alternative routesSome countries have pipelines that bypass the strait, but these alternatives cannot fully replace the volume transported […]

Global prices surged after Israel struck Iran’s South Pars gas field, the world’s largest gas deposit, prompting Iranian missile and drone attacks on energy facilities in Qatar and Saudi Arabia and triggering fears of wider disruption to supplies . Brent crude rose by about 6.24 percent to 114.08 dollars per barrel, its highest level since May 2022, while US West Texas Intermediate crude climbed to around 96.33 dollars per barrel . […]

Iran attack on Qatar gas hub triggers Trump threat and energy price spike

Qatar has reported extensive damage at the Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas hub after Iranian missile and drone strikes, raising fresh fears for global energy supplies . Tehran said it attacked the giant LNG facility in retaliation for an Israeli strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field, which forms part of the world’s largest natural gas reservoir shared with Qatar . Oil prices jumped about five percent and European gas prices surged roughly 35 percent as markets reacted to the risk of prolonged disruption to gas exports from the Gulf . US President Donald Trump warned Iran to stop attacking Qatar, threatening that the United States would massively blow up the entire South Pars gas field if Tehran continued its strikes . In a social media post, Trump said Washington knew nothing about Israel’s earlier attack on South Pars, describing […]
