Navy destroys 12 illegal refineries seizes 531500 litres of crude

The Nigerian Navy says it has dismantled 12 illegal refineries and recovered 531500 litres of stolen and illegally refined petroleum products in the first quarter of 2026. The operations were carried out under Operation Delta Sentinel, the new maritime security effort that replaced Operation Delta Sanity II in the Niger Delta. Director of Naval Information Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho said troops also arrested 18 suspects linked to crude oil theft and related maritime crimes between January and March. He explained that the operation includes enhanced surveillance, better intelligence sharing and a quarterly review system to keep pressure on oil thieves. According to him, February recorded the highest haul with 360700 litres recovered, followed by 118800 litres in January and 52000 litres in March, showing continued activity by illegal refiners despite sustained patrols. Vigilante leader, two others held over death of suspect in Rivers

Police in Rivers State have arrested the leader of a local vigilante group and two others for allegedly torturing a man to death in Okogbe community, Ahoada West Local Government Area.​ The suspects, identified as vigilante chairman Joshua, member Friday Silas and motorcyclist Obed Godlove, were intercepted on Sunday by youths and a Joint Task Force in nearby Ukpeliede community while they were allegedly attempting to dispose of the victim’s body.​ The deceased, known as Ghadafi, was said to have been arrested by the trio on Saturday after he was accused of stealing palm fruits from the community. Police Dismiss Viral Video of Herdsmen Attack in Rivers as False

Police in Rivers State have dismissed as false a viral video circulating on social media that alleged a herdsmen attack within the state. The video, purportedly showing gunfire and calls for help, claimed that Fulani herdsmen attacked and were confronted by Ijaw youths. Police Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko clarified the command’s investigation found no evidence of any such incident. She described the video as a deliberate attempt to incite fear and undermine peace, emphasizing there were no herdsmen attacks reported in Rivers. The command urged the public to disregard the misinformation, warning residents against the dangers of sharing unverified content that might stoke unnecessary tension or damage the state’s reputation. Security agencies reaffirm ongoing efforts to maintain order and robust operational patrols across Rivers State.
