Police in Rivers State have arrested the leader of a local vigilante group and two others for allegedly torturing a man to death in Okogbe community, Ahoada West Local Government Area.
The suspects, identified as vigilante chairman Joshua, member Friday Silas and motorcyclist Obed Godlove, were intercepted on Sunday by youths and a Joint Task Force in nearby Ukpeliede community while they were allegedly attempting to dispose of the victim’s body.
The deceased, known as Ghadafi, was said to have been arrested by the trio on Saturday after he was accused of stealing palm fruits from the community. He was allegedly beaten and tortured until he died, after which the suspects tried to dump his body in a secluded area.
Chief Security Officer of Ukpeliede community, Osiga King, said residents raised alarm after noticing suspicious movement and alerted security operatives. He explained that when the suspects were apprehended, the victim’s hands and legs were still tied with ropes.
King said community members traced a motorcycle carrying what appeared to be a dead body and later found the corpse abandoned in their area, prompting a chase that led to the arrest of the three suspects. He added that the men confessed that the victim died under torture.
The suspects reportedly told community leaders that the deceased had been terrorising the area, stealing palm fruits and had previously stolen a phone belonging to a National Youth Service Corps member. They claimed they had reported him to the police several times but decided to act on their own after allegedly seeing no response.
Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe Koko, confirmed the arrests and said the matter is under investigation. She stated that the deceased had been linked to several criminal complaints, including theft and an attempted sexual assault on a corps member in 2023. The police spokesperson added that the suspects are in custody and that a full investigation is ongoing.

Seven months to the 2027 general elections, worsening insecurity across Nigeria is casting a shadow over preparations for what should be a watershed democratic exercise, with a staggering 5,272 people killed in just five months amid a resurgence of terrorist attacks and banditry. Before the commencement of campaigns for the 2027 general elections, rising insecurity across parts of Nigeria has become a major source of national concern, undermining public confidence in the electoral process. The country's security situation has continued to deteriorate with increasing attacks on civilians, schools, and military formations, raising serious questions about whether the elections will hold as scheduled. Data from the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2025 showed that Nigeria recorded 171 terror attacks in 2025, representing a 43 per cent increase from the 120 attacks recorded in 2024. Terror-related deaths also rose from 513 in 2024 […]

Israel says it won’t withdraw troops from Lebanon, Syria, Gaza
Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz has declared that Israeli troops will remain indefinitely in "security zones" in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Syria, marking a major policy shift in the country's military approach to border security. Katz emphasized that unlike previous instances, the Israeli military is not retreating from areas that have been cleared and taken, stating that troops will remain in the security zones acting as a buffer between adversaries and Israeli communities "regardless of whether the situation in Gaza is temporary or permanent" – similar to the approach in Lebanon and Syria. The defense minister's announcement comes after Israel unilaterally expanded its frontiers in the war unleashed by Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack, and the military strengthens its control over various occupied regions. Israel says it must maintain control of what it refers to as security zones to […]

Some attacks involved the burning of houses and public infrastructure, further deepening humanitarian and economic pressures on affected communities. Despite […]

Diya and I didn’t know where Abiola was held, says Abdulsalami
Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), has revealed that before he assumed power in 1998, neither he nor General Oladipo Diya, the then Chief of General Staff and second‑in‑command to General Sani Abacha, knew the exact location where Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola was being detained. Abdulsalami said that, despite occupying senior positions in the military hierarchy under Abacha, key details about Abiola’s incarceration were tightly controlled and kept away from them. He explained that it was only after Abacha’s sudden death on June 8, 1998, and his own emergence as Head of State, that he gained direct access to information regarding Abiola’s custody. In his account, Abdulsalami stressed that Abacha’s regime operated with a high level of secrecy, especially on sensitive political detainees like Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. He […]

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a Brazil-based Nigerian businessman, Uche Franklin Onyekwere, for attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, in coordinated operations across multiple states. Onyekwere, 47, was apprehended at the airport's arrival hall during the inward screening of passengers on a South African Airways flight from Brazil via Johannesburg, following intelligence-led profiling and surveillance. A body scan conducted on the suspect indicated the presence of concealed substances, and a subsequent strip search uncovered a large wrap of a white powdery substance, later confirmed to be cocaine, strapped to his right thigh. Further examination revealed two additional wraps hidden inside the soles of the flat shoes he was wearing, with NDLEA officers recovering three wraps of cocaine weighing 1.6 kilogrammes in total. Abacha’s death suspicious, says Abdulsalami Abubakar
Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), has described the circumstances surrounding the death of the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, as suspicious, saying the events of that day left him feeling that “something was fishy.” Abacha died suddenly on June 8, 1998, while still serving as Nigeria’s Head of State, with the official explanation pointing to a heart attack. In a new account contained in his book, Call of Duty, and recent media interviews, Abdulsalami recalls that he and the then Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, were mysteriously locked inside a waiting room at the Presidential Villa for nearly an hour before being told Abacha had died. According to Abdulsalami, he was urgently summoned to the Villa that morning but, on arrival, was led into a room and the door was shut with no explanation. […]
