Report shows Nigeria’s economy rebounding strongly

Nigeria’s economy is on a clear recovery path after years of stagnation, with a new report by Quartus Economics indicating that key indicators have recorded their strongest improvement in more than a decade. The study, obtained by The Nation, concludes that “Nigeria is rising” and that the economy is back on track, even though growth still needs to be faster and more broad based. According to the report, Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product grew by a cumulative 8.34 percent between 2024 and 2025, the highest two year expansion in over ten years. This pace also outperformed population growth, which was estimated at less than 4.4 percent over the same period, reversing earlier years when the population was growing faster than the economy. Between 2020 and 2023, GDP growth averaged just 0.97 percent, while the population increased by about 8.78 percent, leading […]

The union says poor leadership practices, political interference and lack of accountability are eroding standards across public institutions. ASUU leaders accuse some university administrators of diverting or misusing resources meant for teaching, research and staff welfare. They also criticise what they describe as a growing culture of patronage in appointments, contract awards and promotions, which they say undermines merit and transparency. The union argues that repeated encroachment on university autonomy by government agencies has weakened internal governance and encouraged arbitrary decisions. It insists that councils and senates must be allowed to function independently, in line with university laws, to protect academic freedom and institutional integrity. ASUU is calling for stricter oversight of how intervention funds […]

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a two-year extension for the tenure of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (SGoF), Mr. AbuduGaniyu Adebomehin. According to a statement released by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the extension will take effect from January 5, 2026, following the recent transfer of the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF) to the Presidency. The decision, the statement noted, was made to enable Adebomehin to complete ongoing reforms in key areas of geospatial data systems and national development planning. “The President expects Mr. Adebomehin to consolidate the reforms within the next two years, focusing on national land management and administration, highways and abutting land infrastructure coordination, reclamation and erosion control programmes, and other related matters of strategic national importance,” Onanuga said. Adebomehin, who was appointed as Surveyor-General in January 2022 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, has […]
