ISSER Urges Government to Treat Waste Management as an Economic Growth Strategy

Experts from the University of Ghana’s Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) are calling on government to redefine waste management as an engine for economic growth, rather than treating it solely as a public health challenge. In a new policy paper titled “The High Cost of Improper Waste Management and Poor Sanitation on Ghana’s Economy,” the ISSER team argues that effective sanitation systems could generate billions in economic value, create new employment opportunities, and improve environmental outcomes. According to the report, every US$1 invested in sanitation could yield up to US$5.50 in economic returns, based on data from the World Health Organization (WHO). The researchers estimate that if Ghana were to dedicate just 1% of its GDP — approximately US$883 million — to sanitation and waste management, the country could generate as much as US$4.86 billion in overall […]

Africa Nears Polio-Free Status, Says WHO on World Polio Day

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that Africa is making remarkable progress toward being declared polio-free. This milestone is driven by strong regional collaboration, digital innovation, and stronger health systems across the continent. According to the WHO, coordinated vaccination campaigns between January and October 2025 reached nearly 200 million children with at least one dose of the polio vaccine. These synchronized efforts, even in challenging regions, have led to a significant drop in outbreaks. Key to this success has been the use of technology, including digital payments for vaccinators and geospatial mapping to find and immunize children in hard-to-reach communities. Despite this progress, the WHO warns that challenges remain, including declining routine immunization and vaccine hesitancy. Sustained commitment is crucial to finally eradicating the disease and strengthening health systems for the future.

Kaduna Launches Drive to Immunize 4.2 Million Children

The Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board has begun an integrated measles and rubella vaccination campaign aimed at protecting over 4.2 million children across the state. The exercise, which started on Saturday, covers all 23 local government areas and targets children aged between nine months and 14 years. It is supported by UNICEF, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and other development partners. Speaking at the launch, Dr. Hamza Ibrahim, Director of Disease Control and Immunisation, said the campaign will help reduce the number of “zero-dose” children — those who have never received any vaccination. Kaduna State, he noted, accounts for around 10 percent of the 100 local government areas in Nigeria facing this challenge, with over 4,000 unvaccinated children identified. “Our progress has been made possible through the dedication of community women and the support of our partners,” Ibrahim said. Dr. Muyi Aina, the NPHCDA CEO, stated that this integrated approach will help reach more children, reduce missed vaccinations, and significantly improve child health outcomes across the country. All services provided are free of charge. The first phase of the campaign is running from October 6th to 15th in 19 northern states and Oyo State. A second phase will cover the southern states in early 2026. The initiative is supported by international partners like WHO and UNICEF.

NDLEA Open to Exporting Cannabis Oil, Bans Local Use

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has stated it is open to the controlled export of cannabis oil to boost foreign earnings but remains firmly opposed to its local consumption in Nigeria. Speaking at a scientific workshop, NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd.) explained the agency's position. He emphasized that while the export of cannabis oil to countries where it is legal could be considered, such operations would be strictly licensed, monitored, and confined to export free zones. Marwa highlighted the significant health risks associated with cannabis, including mental health issues and addiction. He argued that for a country like Nigeria, which already has a high rate of substance abuse, allowing local use would be dangerous. The NDLEA is currently working with the Nigerian Academy of Science on an evidence-based study to guide the country's final policy […]

WHO Warns of ‘Alarming’ Rise in Child Vaping Globally

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning about an "alarming" new wave of nicotine addiction, driven by a surge in children using e-cigarettes. In its first global estimate, the WHO found that more than 100 million people now vape. This includes at least 15 million children between the ages of 13 and 15. Data shows that in countries with available information, children are, on average, nine times more likely to vape than adults. The UN health agency accused the industry of aggressively targeting young people by marketing vapes as less harmful, while actually hooking a new generation on nicotine. This trend risks undermining decades of progress in reducing tobacco use. While the number of global tobacco users has dropped, the WHO urged governments to act faster to implement strong tobacco control policies and protect children from the […]

Officials from the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency confirmed the vaccines are safe, effective, and free of charge. The campaign is integrated with polio vaccination to streamline the process and maximize reach. Health specialists from UNICEF emphasized the importance of community support, urging traditional and religious leaders to help ensure no child is left unvaccinated. Nasarawa is the first state in Nigeria to integrate the Measles-Rubella vaccine into its routine immunization program.

NAFDAC Shuts Chinese Supermarkets, 8 Shops in Abuja

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down two Chinese supermarkets and eight cosmetics shops in Abuja for violating health and safety regulations. The Chinese supermarkets, located in the Jabi district, were sealed for selling food products with labels only in Chinese, which is illegal in Nigeria. All regulated products must have English labeling for the Nigerian market. In a separate operation, NAFDAC closed eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market. These shops were found selling banned, expired, and unregistered products. The confiscated items included illegal skin whitening gummies, unapproved aphrodisiacs, and dangerous body enhancement supplements. NAFDAC's Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that the raids, which seized goods worth over ₦170 million, are to protect Nigerians from harmful chemicals that can cause kidney damage, cancer, and other serious health issues. She advised the public to […]
