Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has launched a scathing attack on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election, describing him as “inept” and “incompetent” and unfit to occupy the nation’s highest office. Lawal, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and a key figure in opposition coalition talks, announced his decision to quit the party, declaring that he would not be part of what he called Atiku’s “rigging machine” as the former vice president positions himself for another presidential run in 2027. In a strongly worded statement shared on social media, Lawal alleged that Atiku is “incompetent, tribal and a religious bigot” who should not be allowed near the presidential office. He warned that Nigeria would be “perpetually doomed” if leaders he described as “ineptocrats” like Atiku are repeatedly […]

Presidency defends troops’ record highlights gains in anti terror war

The Presidency has rejected growing criticism of Nigeria’s security situation and insisted that the armed forces are making steady progress against terrorists, bandits and other criminal groups across the country. In a statement released on Tuesday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga said recent military operations in different regions show that troops are degrading criminal networks and rescuing victims despite ongoing challenges. He argued that isolated attacks often dominate public debate and tend to overshadow consistent successes recorded on the ground. Onanuga said operational reports indicate intensified offensives against insurgents, kidnappers, militias and other non state actors, leading to multiple rescues, arrests and neutralisation of threats. He added that the sacrifices of personnel, including those who have paid the supreme price, are frequently downplayed in public conversations. He cited recent operations in Benue State, where […]

Presidency: Amaechi misled Nigerians on new tax law

The Presidency has accused former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi of misleading Nigerians with false claims about a new tax law that allegedly allows automatic deductions from bank accounts. In a statement, presidential aide Bayo Onanuga said Amaechi’s comments about “Tax Act No 25” and post 2027 enforcement were untrue and designed to create fear. Amaechi had claimed in a viral video that if the ruling All Progressives Congress remains in power after the 2027 elections, a tax policy would activate automatic debits on bank transfers and balances. He questioned why the law was not already in force, suggesting it was being delayed to avoid public backlash before the next polls. Onanuga dismissed these statements as “egregious lies”, insisting there is no provision in Nigeria’s new tax framework that authorises such automatic debits from citizens’ bank accounts. He alleged that […]

FG insists it did not alter new tax laws

Presidency explains rise in 2026 budget to N58trn

The Presidency says the proposed 2026 federal budget of N58.18 trillion is aimed at consolidating reforms, boosting growth and tackling security and social challenges, not just expanding spending for its own sake. The aggregate expenditure is about six per cent higher than the 2025 estimate of N49.7 trillion, reflecting what officials describe as a more ambitious but targeted fiscal plan. According to presidential officials, the increase is driven mainly by higher allocations to defence, internal security and law enforcement in response to persistent insurgency, banditry and other threats. The 2026 plan earmarks about N5.41 trillion for security related spending, making it one of the largest single components of the budget. The budget also scales up capital investment in infrastructure, including roads, rail, power and public assets needed to support private sector led growth. Government argues that sustained infrastructure funding is […]
