Gov Yusuf quit Kwankwasiya, not NNPP – party founder

Founder of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr Boniface Aniebonam, says Kano Governor Abba Yusuf has resigned only from the Kwankwasiya Movement and not from the NNPP itself. He reacted after media reports that Yusuf had dumped the party along with several lawmakers and council chairmen in Kano. Aniebonam argued that the governor’s resignation letter was not addressed to the authentic NNPP National Working Committee (NWC) led by Dr Agbo Major, nor to any recognised party officer. Instead, it was written to a Diso‑Chiranchi Ward chairman who, he said, belongs to the Kwankwasiya Movement and is not recognised by the party’s leadership. He stressed that the NNPP is a registered political party, while Kwankwasiya is merely a former pressure group whose memorandum of association with the NNPP has been terminated. According to him, court judgments from an Abia State […]

Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf split over APC defection move

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s plan to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the All Progressives Congress has widened his rift with NNPP leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and split the party’s structures in Kano. As Yusuf marked his 63rd birthday in Abuja with top officials and allies, Kwankwaso stayed back in Kano, opening a loyalty register for office holders and holding meetings with Kwankwasiyya loyalists to confirm who still stands with him. The governor is said to enjoy the backing of all 40 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and the 44 local government chairmen, positioning him strongly for a move to the APC. However, NNPP federal lawmakers from Kano are divided, with some already crossing to the APC while others, such as Umar Mukhtari Zakari of Tarauni, openly oppose the defection plan. Several […]

Two NNPP Reps Dump Party for APC Over Leadership Crisis

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House of Representatives has gained two new members after NNPP lawmakers Abdulmuminu Jibrin and Sagir Ibrahim Koki from Kano defected over unresolved leadership crises. The Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, announced their defection at Thursday’s plenary. Jibrin, chair of the House Committee on Housing, resigned from NNPP and the Kwakwasiya movement earlier in the week, citing “irreconcilable differences within the leadership” at state and national levels. Sagir Koki also cited the inability to properly consult and represent his constituency due to party issues. Their defection comes just a day after a Kaduna PDP House member also joined APC, signaling further realignment ahead of 2027 elections. Members blame internal conflict for hampering their ability to serve constituents and believe switching to APC offers greater stability and representation.

Kano Lawmaker Quits NNPP Over Leadership Crisis

Sagir Ibrahim Koki, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Midstream) and representative of Kano Municipal Federal Constituency, has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). Koki announced his resignation via his official X account, attributing his exit to persistent national leadership crises within the party. In his letter to the Zaitawa Ward Chairperson, Koki cited his constitutional right to quit and referenced internal party conflicts as the main reason for stepping down. He said the ongoing leadership disputes made it “difficult, if not impossible,” to fulfill his duties to Kano Municipal residents. Koki thanked the party for the chance to serve and acknowledged the support and experience gained. His move follows the recent defection of Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi from NNPP to PDP, intensifying speculation over the party’s future.
