Governor Yusuf’s Unwavering Loyalty to Kwankwaso
Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has thrown his weight behind Rabiu Kwankwaso , the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, declaring that the party’s Kano chapter will stand by Kwankwaso “wherever he goes politically.”
The statement comes amid speculation about Kwankwaso’s potential resignation from the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya movement , a socio-political group loyal to the former governor. Yusuf dismissed concerns, emphasizing unity within the party:
“Wherever he [Kwankwaso] goes politically, his supporters will follow.”
Context: Kwankwaso’s Political Influence
Kwankwaso, a two-time governor of Kano State and the face of the NNPP, remains a towering figure in northern Nigerian politics. Despite losing the 2023 presidential race, his grassroots influence and the Kwankwasiyya movement continue to shape political dynamics in Kano and beyond.
A Call for Grassroots Governance
Addressing 484 councillors from Kano’s 44 local government areas, Yusuf urged them to prioritize citizens’ needs:
“You are the eyes and ears of government at the grassroots. Listen to the people, identify their urgent needs, and report back—we will act.”
The governor’s message underscores efforts to align party loyalty with effective governance, leveraging Kwankwaso’s legacy to maintain cohesion.
Why This Pledge Matters
- Political Stability: Yusuf’s assurance signals unity within the NNPP, countering rumors of internal rifts.
- Kwankwasiyya’s Role: The movement’s loyalty reinforces Kwankwaso’s enduring influence over Kano’s political machinery.
- 2023 Election Aftermath: The statement highlights the NNPP’s focus on rebuilding post-election while maintaining its base.
