Gov Yusuf boasts: ‘I’ll do second term in APC, not NNPP’

Kano State governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has declared that he plans to seek a second term in office on the platform of the All Progressives Congress rather than the New Nigeria Peoples Party. Yusuf recently defected from NNPP to APC after a prolonged political rift with his former ally, Rabiu Kwankwaso. Reacting to a viral slogan and taunt that he would serve just “falle daya” (one term), Yusuf said the chant was only correct in relation to his stay in NNPP. “It is one term in NNPP, but we will do the second term in APC,” he said in Hausa, drawing cheers from his supporters. The governor insisted that no opposition party, including the African Democratic Congress, would be able to take Kano from him and the APC in the 2027 elections. He dismissed ADC’s chances, saying the party would […]

12 Reps dump opposition for APC, ADC ahead of 2027 polls

Twelve members of the House of Representatives have defected from their parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress and the African Democratic Congress as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections. The lawmakers, drawn from different geopolitical zones, formally notified the House of their decision in separate letters read during plenary by the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas. Most of them cited prolonged internal crises, leadership tussles and irreconcilable differences in their former parties as reasons for dumping their platforms. Those who moved to the APC largely came from the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party and other opposition parties that have been battling factional disputes since the last election cycle. Others chose the ADC, which has been positioning itself as a major opposition force and actively courting sitting lawmakers ahead of 2027. Analysts say the latest […]

NNPP insists no link between Kwankwaso and extremists

The New Nigeria Peoples Party has rejected moves in the United States to sanction its national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, insisting there is no evidence tying him to any extremist organisation. NNPP campaign secretary Folashade Aliu said on Channels Television that the proposed bill, which also mentions Miyetti Allah groups, is unjust and malicious. She challenged the bill’s sponsors to present any proof they claim to have against Kwankwaso. Aliu questioned why one individual would be singled out in a country of over 260 million people on an issue as sensitive as religion and terrorism. She argued that the focus on Kwankwaso raises serious doubts about the true intent behind the legislative move. According to her, even a small fraction of Nigeria’s population in leadership positions would still amount to many people capable of offering solutions to national problems. She […]

U.S. bill targets Kwankwaso, Miyetti Allah over alleged religious violations

A new bill before the United States Congress could see former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and some Fulani groups hit with visa bans and asset freezes over alleged violations of religious freedom. The draft law, titled Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, seeks targeted sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act. The bill, sponsored by five US lawmakers including Riley Moore, lists Kwankwaso, Fulani ethnic nomad militias, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria MACBAN and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore among those that could face punishment. It also urges the US State and Treasury Departments to either impose sanctions or explain to Congress why they have not done so. Some sections of the proposed legislation direct the US Secretary of State to determine whether certain Fulani militias qualify to be designated as foreign […]

NNPP distances itself from Kwankwaso over judges’ visit claim

The New Nigeria People’s Party has distanced itself from former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso over his claim that he took Governor Abba Yusuf to meet some Supreme Court judges in 2019. In a statement by its National Secretary, Oginni Olaposi Sunday, the party said Kwankwaso was not a member of the NNPP at the time the alleged visit took place. It described reports linking the party to the allegation as misleading and asked the Nigerian Bar Association to remove NNPP’s name from any related petition to the Inspector General of Police. The party explained that Kwankwaso only joined the NNPP a few months before the 2023 general elections, alongside Buba Galadima, Prof Rufai Alkali, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, Prof Hanga and Abba Yusuf. NNPP also rejected claims that Kwankwaso is a founding member. It stressed that the party was […]

In a statement, APC stakeholders said Yusuf’s decision would fast‑track infrastructural development, enhance security coordination and improve service delivery by placing Kano at the centre of national policy and economic decision‑making.
